REVIEW: REAL MADRID 3 - DEPORTIVO 2 (LIGA)

11 Dec 2016
Another painful defeat as Depor were winning 1-2 by minute 80, great effort for the Galicians that return to A Coruña with a new defeat with a goal conceded in the stoppage time.

BEFORE THE GAME
Coach Gaizka Garitano was repeating a lineup for the first time on the season. Przemysław Tytoń was the goalkeeper, Juanfran Navarro performed at the right side of the defence, Fernando Navarro played on the left, while Sidnei Rechel and Raúl Albentosa were the centre-backs.

Celso Borges and Guilherme were the centre midfielders, Carles Gil attacked from the right wing, Ryan Babel did it from the left, Emre Çolak was the playmaker and Florin Andone was the centre forward.

At Real Madrid, coach Zinedine Zidane was making eight chances compared to the derby with FC Barcelona. James and Isco were starters, Álvaro Morata was the centre forward, while Casemiro was performing at midfield.

FIRST HALF
A decent Depor were able to stop a Real Madrid playing with teal full of substitutes. The locals had the ball and the initiative, but the Galicians had the best chance to score. There were some clear errors in defence, but Real Madrid weren’t able to capitalize them.

The game had a slow start; Deportivo were locked at their side of the field and only put some pressure up front in some specific plays, while Real Madrid had the ball but didn’t have depth to create scoring chances, just a couple of blocked shots by Kroos.

The first approximation in the game came at minute 12, Juanfran failed at the moment of stopping a cross from the left and Albentosa cleared the danger before Morata was able to shot on target. One minute alter Isco missed the target firing from outside the area.

At minute 16, Tytoń made a double save. In the first he deflected a low cross from the left, and later he rescued the ball in the middle of two rivals and Albentosa. Los Blancos were comfortably having the ball, but later they missed fluidity to create scoring opportunities.

Thus, the best chance for Real Madrid had to arrive in a free-kick, Sergio Ramos missed the target firing from the edge of the area (25’). Depor’s first chance in the game came at minute 28, after two corner-kicks Borges found the ball at the box and his precise shot searching for the low corner was saved by local goalie Keylor Navas.

Real Madrid replied with a counterattack in which Albentosa failed clearing the ball and James faced Tytoń one-on-one, and the Polish keeper blocked the low attempt and later Sidnei cleared the danger. Deportivo faced some problems in defence despite the lack of accuracy of Real Madrid, this since Navarro and Juanfran had several problems on the sides. Albentosa also committed some errors.

Depor’s golden chance came at minute 35, Çolak released a cross from the left in a free-kick action, Borges headed the ball and it hit the near post of Keylor Navas, the rebound crossed the goal line and Guilherme didn’t arrive on time to push the ball in.

SECOND HALF
Another hard hit for the Galicians. Real Madrid scored without doing too much, but neither Depor needed too much to turn the game upside down. Then Depor lost again with goals scored at the last minutes, the Madrilenians pushed and were lucky to net the equalizer, then Sergio Ramos scored again at the last minute.

The final part started with Real Madrid having the ball and they found a quick goal after an error by Carles Gil. The Valencian winger lost the ball on the left side of the defence and Isco got it, then he assisted Álvaro Morata, who scored with a curved shot from the edge of the area.

The goal didn’t change the script in the game, Real Madrid were still having the ball and Depor were waiting for a counterattack. What changed was the lineup as Joselu replaced Çolak. And that was going to be a big factor in the game as the striker was going to score twice in a matter of one minute.

In the first, Depor unleashed a counterattack after a corner-kick for the locals. Andone fought for the ball until the end and the reward was to seize the distraction of Casemiro, then Carles Gil drilled a cross to Joselu, who scored with a strong shot from the edge of the area, the ball hit the left corner and went in.

Just seconds later a new counterattack ended with Andone with the assist, this time Joselu scored with a low shot that was deflected by Navas, but the ball still went in. The Bernabéu was shocked because, without doing too much, Depor were leading in the scoresheet.

The second change at Deportivo was the entry of Mosquera for Andone, it was an attempt to have the ball at midfield, which was replied with the entry of Fayçal Fajr for Babel. Truly Real Madrid pushed hard for the equalizer, but never had a clear chance in an open play, just countless crosses that gave some problems to Tytoń.

And then it came the drama for Depor, team that’s getting using to lose at the last minute. In one of the countless crosses by the locals they found the equalizer and it was a lucky play, substitute Lucas Vázquez released a cross from the left, another substitute, Mariano, was lucky as he hit the ball with the shoulder, the ball passed inches away from Sidnei and entered at the far post of Tytoń

Seven minutes were remaining and Real Madrid continued pushing and only found the goal in the stoppage time. Sergio Ramos, who is used to score last-minute goals, headed a corner-kick and left the points at the Bernabéu. It was a big distraction of the defence as he was alone at the box collecting the cross from Kroos

AFTER THE GAME
Déjà vu for Deportivo. Real Madrid had the ball, but were never better than the Galicians. Joselu seized two counterattacks and it seemed that Depor were leading to an upset, but again the ghost of the last-minute haunted Garitano’s men and they conceded the winning goal for Real in the stoppage time.

Deportivo lost again, but will remain out of relegation until 2017, this for the losses of CA Osasuna and Valencia CF. The last game in the year is taking place on next Sunday as, precisely, CA Osasuna visit the Riazor (18h30 CET).
