THINKING OF ALAVÉS AND ESPANYOL

02 Jan 2017
Busy start in 2017 for Depor with two games in a matter of four days. Garitano has problems as he only has nineteen available men for both matches.

2016 ended with a Depor full of hope due to the last results in the year, and now it kick-offs 2017 with worries for the situation that lies ahead. The pass in Copa means that the team has to play twice in a week at least during the next fourteen days.

And coach Gaizka Garitano finds a limited squad for this week’s double challenge, first in Copa against Deportivo Alavés (Tuesday, 21h15 CET) and then in liga visiting RCD Espanyol (Friday, 20h45 CET).

And it’s that only nineteen men are available for both games. Ryan Babel is gone, while playmaker Fayçal Fajr is concentrated with Morocco ahead of the African Cup. Besides, there are two men injured.

Right-back Laure (Soleus) is already training with the team, but this week is too soon for him. Meanwhile, right winger Carlos Gil is dragging a knee problem since the first leg in Copa against Real Betis, scans were made on Friday and it was determined that he suffered a knee sprain, so the Valencian will be out for two or three weeks.

And there are more problems as striker Florin Andone is dealing with a hamstring problem and is doubtful for Tuesday’s game, so the coach could end up with exactly eighteen men for the first game in 2017. For this reason Borja Valle hasn’t been loaned out. With the club lasting in signing reinforcements the coach will have to use Fabril’s players if he wants to dose his men.

The rivals arrive living different moments, Deportivo Alavés have spent six official games without been defeated and coach Mauricio Pellegrino has no injuries before the visit to the Riazor. Striker Manu Barreiro rescinded his contract during last week and joined Segunda club Gimnástic Tarragona.

In the case of RCD Espanyol, they were doing a solid season, but the big defeat before FC Barcelona and especially the elimination in Copa by Segunda club AD Alcorcón opened some questions. Still, they will arrive fresher as Friday’s game will be their first meeting in the new year

The team returns to train until today and coach Quique Sánchez Flores has five doubts due to injury problems: Attacker Léo Baptistão (Achilles), goalkeeper Diego López (leg wound), plus centre midfielders David López (hamstring), Víctor Sánchez (Soleus) and Javi Fuego (back).
