GARITANO OUT OF DEPORTIVO

27 Feb 2017
Gaizka Garitano has been sacked after the defeat at CD Leganés. The Basque man only lasted seven months at Deportivo and leaves the team close to relegation. The name of the substitute should be known on Monday.

Late on Sunday Deportivo announced the exit of Gaizka Garitano. It was the expected call after the disastrous defeat at CD Leganés (4-0). The Basque man arrived back in June signing a one-year-contract and promising some stability after the tormenting departure of Víctor Sánchez.

Truly things were calmer inside the changing room with him on board, but the results didn’t arrive. After a poor start in la liga the team showed some reaction at the end of 2016, but only to fell apart in 2017. Currently the Blanquiazul team is one of the two Primera sides that remain winless in 2017 and the defeat with CD Leganés meant the fourth straight loss for a team that’s now at the edge of demotion.

It’s true that Deportivo were unlucky in several games as it dropped points in the end of the meetings and also after some controversial calls by the referees, while at the same time lost key players like Lucas and Babel, but it’s also true that Garitano failed to build up a solid block, mainly in defence, while he was constantly failing with the substitutions. A good example was the weird 3-5-2 draw of the second half at CD Leganés when the team was already 2-0 down.

Garitano leaves Deportivo with a poor record: 27 official games (23 in liga and 4 in Copa) with only five victories and nine draws, while he suffered thirteen defeats. Actually, the Basque man only won 9 of his last 57 liga games as a coach.

The decision to sack Garitano was unanimous among the members at the board, but it was informed until late on Sunday as the club was still negotiating with the replacement. The main names linked at this point are Sergio González and Pepe Mel, for now Garitano will say good-bye in a press conference scheduled for Monday’s morning (10h30 CET), while Fabril’s Cristóbal Parralo, joined by Javier Manjarín and Julio Hernando, will direct the training session of the first team (Abegondo, 11h00 CET).
