Atlético reopened the debate for the third place after a convincing win over Sevilla, while the results at the bottom opened a window to Sporting Gijón in the fight to survive.

Nothing changed in the fight for the title as both Real Madrid and FC Barcelona won their respective matches, though in both cases it was with some suffering. The Madrilenians battled at San Mamés and managed to get a 1-2 win over Athletic Club, while the Catalans faced problems before a combative Valencia CF, Los Chés were 2-2 by at the Camp Nou by half-time, but couldn’t bear the pressure after suffering an expulsion and lost 4-2.

What’s now interesting is the fight for the third place. Atlético Madrid beat Sevilla CF at the Calderón (3-1) and reduced the distance with the Andalusians to only two points, and with their bad form in recent games, eliminated in Champions League and only one pointed added in the last three liga meetings, anything can happen in the quest for the last direct ticket to the Champions League.

Meanwhile the two clubs in the Europa League spots suffered set-backs, Villarreal CF lost at UD Las Palmas (1-0), while Real Sociedad suffered a second straight loss, this time visiting Deportivo Alavés (0-1). However, the set-backs weren’t seized by either by Athletic or SD Eibar, the latter only got a 1-1 draw hosting RCD Espanyol.

The Asturians have now reduced the distance with salvation to only five points and are breathing fresh air. The side that seems dead already is CA Osasuna, the Navarrans lost again, this time visiting Real Betis (2-0), they are now fourteen points under safety and seem condemned with only ten games remaining in the calendar.
