Depor’s gals ended its first season on last weekend. The team was unable to qualify for the promotion playoff, but the second place is meritorious and marks the promising future of a club that aspires to reach the elite.

The first official season of the female section of Deportivo ended this weekend with a 7-0 win over El Olivo, a big score that was a constant throughout the season. The outcome wasn’t the dreamed one as the gals missed the first place (the first place in the group and the best second place qualify for the 8-team promotion playoff), but the second spot is a big step for a club that wants the promotion to Liga Iberdrola.

The key to end second below group winners Oviedo Moderno was the 0-0 draw in the first round, and later to lose against them in the away match (2-1). Besides, the surprising defeat visiting fifth place CPM Friol (2-1). In the end a five-point difference with the lead and the team only suffered 3 defeats in 26 matches disputed.

The team was a machine of goals as they scored 120 goals, the highest number in the group and the sixth best mark in Segunda División; only below CD Femarguín (230), Madrid Ladies (140), Granada Ladies (126), Sevilla Ladies (121) & CD Juan Grande (121).

In this first season, several ladies demonstrated interesting things, starting with captain Tere Abelleira, the midfielder is now a fixed gal in the rosters of U-17 Spain (they are about to dispute the UEFA Elite Round). The other player that has been picked to the national team is Nuria Rábano, who already played with U-19 Spain. She ended the season netting 17 goals.

But the top-scorer at the team was Mexican Estefanía Pabst “Estefi”, who ended the season netting 30 goals. At middle of the season the club decided to sign two Venezuelans, striker Gabriela García “Gabi” and midfielder Lourdes Moreno “Kika”. The duo wasn’t part of the normal starting eleven as they are still adapting.

Other players that left a positive impression were centre-backs Miriam Ríos, Raquel Béjar and Carmela Barro, side defender Cristina Martínez “Cris”, midfielders María Geremías “Gere” María Corral, plus attacker Elvira García, the later scored 13 goals during the season.

The club has big expectations ahead of next season; for that reason two players already signed professional contracts: Raquel Béjar and Tere Abelleira
