PLAYERS REVIEW 2016/17: GOALKEEPERS

26 May 2017
Once again Deportivo decided to have three goalkeepers, four men were signed for the job as in the middle of the season Rubén was loaned to Anderlecht.

Not a good season for the goalkeepers, Lux and Tytoń had the chance to be the starting choices, but failed to impress the general opinion. Roef and Rubén had small chances and left a positive impression. The following is the analysis of the keepers that played for Depor on this season.

German Lux -Deceiving. (2,205 minutes on the season). Another season in which the Argentine failed to convince the general opinion. In many games, Deportivo allowed goals that seemed avoidable and part of that feeling was related to the fact that Lux left the impression that he could have done better. On this season, Lux’s stats were deceiving, because he was making important saves, but normally at that point the team was already losing by one or two goals.

He was the starting keeper at the beginning of the league season. Then, Lux was dropped from the starting role after the debacle in the derby at RC Celta (matchday 09). Then Garitano started to rely in Tytoń, and four months later, when the Polish failed to convince Lux retuned into the starting formation but always leaving the same impression.

Przemysław Tytoń -Doubtful- (1,125) The Polish started the season as the second keeper in liga, and gave a step forward when Garitano decided to replace Lux. He left a positive impression at the beginning, but with the passage of the games the doubts increased as he started to make mistakes that cost goals. It cannot be said that his work was terrible, but neither brought the needed sense of security. After the visit to Atlético Club (Feb 11) he returned to be the second keeper and only played again in the home game with Real Madrid (April 26), this since Lux was suspended.

Rubén Martínez -Missed- (0) He was the third keeper at the squad and Garitano never gave him the chance to play in liga; actually, he was never picked for any game. It was until the Copa Del Rey showed up that the A Coruña-born player had the chance to play, and left a positive feeling, but after the elimination in the series with Alavés, he decided to leave and the Galician was loaned to RSC Anderlecht. It was then when the fans started to miss him as his performances in the Europa League were noticed, just when Depor were having defensive problems in liga.

Davy Roef -Enigmatic- (90) The Belgian was the fourth keeper for Depor in the season. He arrived as part of the negotiations with RSC Anderlecht for Rubén. He was normally picked for the league meetings, though later ended out of the final squad. He barely spoke to the press and had the chance to play in the closing matchday against UD Las Palmas (May 20). Roef left a positive impression with his four saves in that game, but since there was no pressure the enigma is how he could have performed with something at stake.
