PLAYERS REVIEW 2016/17: MIDFIELDERS

27 May 2017
Mixed results with the midfielders of Deportivo during the season, from the freshness of Guilherme and the goals of Borges to the decreasing performance of Mosquera. Fabril’s Edu Expósito had the chance to debut.

Seven midfielders (centre midfielders and playmakers) had the chance to play for Deportivo during the season. There were mixed news as some men like Álex and Mosquera lowered their presence with the team, while Guilherme added fresh ideas. The following is a summary of their performance.

Guilherme -Refreshing- (2,280 minutes on the season) Signed during the summer, the Brazilian left a positive impression during the pre-season, but at the start of the league campaign it gave the impression that Primera División was too much for him, for that reason Garitano started to bench him after been a starter in the first games against Eibar and Betis.

But Guilherme had a second chance and this time he added things to the team. His ability to steal the ball and later distribute the game at midfield was unique. He ended the season as the fifth player with the better pass ratio (83.8%) and didn’t have more minutes due to an injury that sidelined him for several weeks. His best moment was to score a brace in the visit to CA Osasuna (April 30)

Pedro Mosquera -Deteriorated- (1,558) The Galician midfielder continued the implosion witnessed at the end of last season. After scoring a goal in the opening game before Eibar, Mosquera was absent of the games, missing too many passes and therefore losing the ball in compromised positions. His pass ratio was only the eleventh best mark at Depor (80.6%). After the debacle against Sevilla (November 19) Garitano lost the patience and Guilherme became a starter again.

Between December and January, he only played 22 minutes in liga, but the arrival of Pepe Mel changed the picture, though also influenced by the injury of Guilherme. There was an improvement at the end of the season as he scored two goals in four games, one of them a crucial goal in the visit to Sporting (March 05). Later he sustained a thigh injury that left him out for the final games, though the Galician sacrificed himself and risked in order to be available for the last two meetings.

Celso Borges -Aerial- (2,723) New step forward for the Central American, he was a fixed starter for both, Garitano and Pepe Mel, and therefore was the midfielder with more minutes on the season. His main contribution was to be the player with more aerial duels won at the team (227), the eighth best mark in the league. He was also the second-best scorer at the team with six goals added to his tally, two of them from the penalty spot. He missed a key penalty in the home game against Granada (April 05). His best moment was to score a brace visiting Málaga (November 26).

Álex Bergantiños -Diminished- (552) His minutes in liga were cut to the third part of the ones had during the campaign 2015/16. The reason was that Garitano never trusted him. The Galician was considered as the fourth centre midfielder at the team, so he wasn’t picked for the games and even was unable to play in Copa Del Rey. He was close to leave during the winter window, only the arrival of Pepe Mel changed the picture as he started to have minutes, though also as a consequence of Mosquera’s poor form and Guilherme’s injury. His best moment was to score a goal against Barcelona (March 12).

Emre Çolak -Unstable- (2,476) The Turkish has unique skills and both Garitano and Pepe Mel always praised him, the problem was that in many games he was simple absent, so it isn’t a surprise to notice that he was the player that was replaced in more opportunities (13).  Çolak also have a strong character and it drove him to some confrontations with players and the coaches, though nothing too serious.

But when Çolak was plugged, he demonstrated great things. He made 71 key passes (final pass leading to a shot at goal), which was the eighth best mark at Primera División and also contributed with six assists, the highest number at Depor tied with Juanfran.

Fayçal Fajr -Intermittent- (1,202) The multifunctional player of the season, he started the campaign acting as a playmaker for Garitano and ended performing as a left winger for Pepe Mel, the problem is that he was going in and out of the formations as his performance was intermittent. His lowest moment was to be sent out in the visit to Atlético forcing his team to play with one less man for an entire half (September 25). The Moroccan also missed a penalty against Valencia (April 02).

Edu Expósito -Novel- (45) One of the two Fabril’s players that had the chance to play in liga during this season. Pepe Mel noticed his skills and kept training with him since his arrival at the first team. He had the chance to debut in the home game with Espanyol (May 07). He made a decent job, but had to be sacrificed at half-time as Depor were losing and the coach needed more offensive players on the pitch.
