PENDING ISSUES AT THE MARKET

15 Aug 2017
The arrival of Lucas Pérez is conditioning the signing of a new keeper, while Juan Dominguez and Saúl García are at the door out. The future of Bicho is also unknown.

La liga starts this weekend and the summer transfer window will be closed on September 1. It can be said that at this height Deportivo have already completed the 70% of the operations regarding the composition of the squad.

The arrival of Adrián raised the number of players at the first team to 25 men, two of them will leave and at least one more signing is expected. Coach Pepe Mel has stated that the ideal thing is to have 22 or 23 players, and the club is about to match that plan. For now, there are five pending issues before closing the squad for the new season.

1- A striker and the hope for Lucas Pérez: Deportivo will at least make one more signing before closing the marker and it will be a new striker, and everybody knows that the desired target is Lucas Pérez. The Galician already presented two offers, but Arsenal FC remains without counting with the player and at the same time they don’t want to lose money.

The last thing known is what Lucas’ agent, Rodrigo Lovelle, said at Sky Sports: “"I think the £10.9m [€12m] that Deportivo have offered Arsenal is a great deal. Deportivo received £12.7m [€14m] when they sold him to them last summer. They are giving everything to make this transfer possible. Lucas wants to play, but he has a contract with Arsenal. I am hopeful an agreement can be reached.”

Pepe Mel already said on last week that there’s a plan B in case of failing with Lucas. On Monday La Voz de Galicia wrote that one of the studied options was the double pack Diego Costa-Luciano Vietto. According to the source, since Atlético cannot inscribe signings until January, the plan was to loan Costa to Depor until January, and then exchange the player for Vietto in the winter window. But this option was ruled out due to the high wages of Costa.

2- A new keeper depends on the striker: Pepe Mel wants a new goalkeeper and the club tried to sign Diego Alves, Valdés and Robles, but right now there has been a change of plans as the club is focused in the arrival of a new striker, and the final move for the keeper will be made only after calculating if the salary cap will allow this operation. It’s complicate as this signing will also imply the exit of either Tytoń or Rubén Martínez, and neither of them seem willing to leave.

Mel explained the situation last week during an interview at Radio Cadena Cope, "I'm afraid that so much effort in Lucas Pérez could hurt us to make the other signing at the other area. And I think we need both: forward and goalkeeper. And not because I don’t trust the two goalkeepers that we have, I think they do a good job, but I think we have to be strong and competitive and avoid any kind of trouble.”

3- Juan Dominguez: After a disastrous loan at RCD Mallorca, Juan Dominguez quickly found out that there was no room for him at Deportivo. He’s the only player training at Abegondo without minutes in the 12 friendly matches of the pre-season and his exit was clear after he was left out of the concentration in Vilalba. There are no clues at this point about his possible destination.

4- Saul García: It’s a very similar case to Juan Dominguez. Left-back Saul García didn’t have a good season on last year and was told by Mel himself that he was out of the coach’s plans. He was able to play 158 minutes in the pre-season, but the presence of Navarro and Luisinho leave him without a spot. He was also left out of the concentration in Vilalba and his exit is imminent.

5- The future of Bicho: Winger Bicho had an important presence in the pre-season, he played in 9 of the 10 friendly games before the Teresa Herrera (414 minutes) scoring a goal and providing three assists, but there’s no room for him in Mel’s squad despite been included in the concentration in Vilalba. It was commented that the club is interested in seeing him playing at Fabril with the chance to train and even play with the first team, but there’s also the chance to go out loaned. For now, the player is deciding.
