THE INTERNATIONAL PLAYERS

07 Sep 2017
Four of the six international players are close to reach the next World Cup, while Andone and new signing Pantilimon are already eliminated.

In general, it was a good break for the international players at Deportivo. The Galician club had five men playing World Cup qualifying games, though the number was raised to six as Costel Pantilimon was signed on deadline day, just the day when Romania was playing its first game on this window.

Fabian Schär was one of the two Depor’s players that performed for 120 minutes during the window, Switzerland clinched two 3-0 wins over Andorra and Latvia and are leading group B thee points above Portugal. With two games remaining they are about to qualify for the World Cup 2018.

But they need to secure the first place or instead will have to play the playoff, on next month they host Hungary, while Portugal visit Andorra, and if both sides clinch the victory, then everything will be decided in the last matchday with the Swiss visiting the Portuguese side.

The other player that performed for 120 minutes during the window was Celso Borges, Costa Rica cinched a huge 0-2 win visiting the United States and later rescued a point hosting Mexico (1-1). Borges also became the player with more appearances in World Cup qualifiers for his country (43).

The Central American nation is now second in the final stage of CONCACAF and, with only two matchdays remaining, they have almost both feet in the World Cup, because Honduras will need a huge win in San José (October 6) in order to drop them from the spots that grant the qualification.

Another player with a sweet week was Fede Valverde, the midfielder was on the bench in the goalless draw before Argentina and later debuted with the national team during the 0-2 win visiting Paraguay. Valverde not only debuted, but also scored the first goal and was named as the best player in the game. Uruguay is second in CONMEBOL and only need a win within the last two games in order to secure the spot, in October they face the last two places in the round, Venezuela and Bolivia.

Meanwhile, Przemysław Tytoń was picked by Poland, but later the keeper was not even on the bench in the big loss against Denmark (0-4) and the victory over Kazakhstan (3-0). The Polish side command group E and will secure the World Cup spot with a win visiting Armenia or instead will have to secure place hosting direct rival Montenegro.

In that same group, Romania was eliminated despite an initial 1-0 win over Armenia, what happened is that later they lost 1-0 visiting Montenegro. Florin Andone was a starter in both meetings and was replaced in the second one, while Pantilimon was on the bench.
