GERARD VALENTÍN: “I WANT TO PLAY IN LIGA”

11 Oct 2017
Right-back Gerard Valentín knows that the Copa Del Rey is his main chance to play, but the Catalan targets la liga as he wants to continue enjoying minutes.

Gerard Valentín addressed the media on Tuesday’s noon.  He is hopeful after been able to debut at the elite, “It was a hope to be able to debut at Primera División, especially at home and especially with a victory. You cannot ask for more.”

But he isn’t content only with that, he wants more participation in la liga, this after been asked if he sees the Copa as his main target, “I look at Eibar, the true. My hope is to be able to play in liga and the Copa will come later. I have hopes of playing in liga.”

He admitted the difficulties to gain an opportunity after not been picked in the first six liga matchdays, “The true is that I had to work hard in order to enjoy of those minutes. The 25 players at the squad fight for that. You rely in your work in order to move forward. We are used to this as footballers, when you arrive to a new place you need to convince.”

“All steps are important. This is the reward for your work. I know that you need to convince when you make a step forward. You need to demonstrate your value and I am content for debuting and for winning the game.” He added.

About the visit to SD Eibar, he refused to describe the Basque teams as a surprise, “All the teams are competitive, it doesn’t matter how they are and where you play. We will be traveling there in order to give our best. I don’t call it a miracle, in the end they have spent three or four years making a very good campaign. It can be if it was it only one year.”

The Catalan right-back is aware that Deportivo need to improve the results playing outside the Riazor, “In the end you need to win outside home, because you will win at home, yes, but not all the games, and in the end you will need away wins.”

Asked about the situation of Pepe Mel, he said that the coach is used to live delicate moments, “We are used to this, to this profession, each week there’s something. One week you are content in the next everybody is sad. He has spent many years as a coach and is used to this, he faces it like it was the first day.”

Finally, Gerard talked of Juanfran, his competence at the right-back position, “He competed at the top, in many games the team has been bad, especially playing outside home, but in a general sense he was fine. I look at him and try to learn.”
