Deportivo start 2018 with the pending issue of fixing the poor defence. The team was the second worst defence in 2017 in terms of more goals allowed, and needs to fix the softness at the back zone.

Depor allowed 68 goals in the 39 Primera matches disputed in 2017. Only UD Las Palmas presented a worst statistic (88 goals in 39 games). The defensive bleeding remains to be the main thing that coach Cristóbal Parralo needs to fix in order to revert the current situation with a team in relegation.

And it won’t be an easy task as it requires fixing several issues. It all starts with the goalkeepers, because the four goalies that have played for the first team have an average of saves of only the 59% regarding the shots on target. This means that the goalkeeper almost concedes a goal for every two shots on target made by the rival.

It’s the second worst mark at Primera only above the 58% of SD Eibar. Another statistic that demonstrates the poorness of the goalkeepers is the number of shots needed to concede a goal: 6.56. It’s the second worst mark at the elite, only above Real Sociedad (6.24) and SD Eibar (4.9).

It explains the feeling that the rivals need too little to score against Deportivo, and clearly demonstrates the big error of the club’s officials at the moment of despising the signing of a solid keeper during the past summer. The defence doesn’t concede too many opportunities, but the ones conceded are enough to allow goals and lose the games.

The problems continue with the rest of the team, starting with the lack of concentration at the start of the games. Depor always seem to be uphill in the games. And the stats demonstrate this. The team has conceded 32 goals this league season, 9 of those goals were allowed before the 15-minute mark. Also, Depor conceded the first goal in 13 of the 17 games on this campaign.

In the end, Deportivo have only clinched three clean sheets during the current Primera campaign: 1-0 Vs. Alavés (September 20), 0-0 at SD Eibar (October 15) and 1-0 Vs. CD Leganés (December 9).
It’s a complex situation as the solution not only passes by signing a goalkeeper, something that the club is trying to do for the winter window, but also by fixing several situations from the positioning of the offensive players at the moment of defending to the concentration of the defenders throughout the matches.
