FIRST ROUND 2017/18: CLUB’S CRISIS

16 Jan 2018
Deportivo launched a new season in Primera with a shining project, at the end of the first round it already lost a coach and the two main figures directing the sporting project.

The previous two seasons were disappointing as Deportivo could only battle in order to avoid the relegation, the project of the season 2017/18 was targeting better goals, perhaps not pointing to a European place, but to at least witness a progression with a team living at midtable.

But at the middle of the season Depor are still chased by old ghosts. The team ends the first round been in relegation and leaving the impression that things hasn’t changed and the worst part, with a fracture inside the club that already hit the sporting direction.

And it’s that the faces that started the project are already gone. Former coach Pepe Mel left the club after only nine matchdays, the team only won two games in the period and was leaving the impression that progress has been made in a tactical sense. Before been fired the main head of the sporting direction left the club: sporting advisor Fernando Vidal.

Vidal left Depor on October 3 saying that, "In recent times, for many different reasons, I haven’t felt as comfortable as I would have liked. There are reasons pushing me to take this decision and I have passed it to our President and those reasons belong to a private field. This situation was becoming increasingly complex, significantly affecting my personal situation and that’s why I’m forced to present my irrevocable resignation.”

The comment was that Vidal didn’t want the continuity of Mel for this season and decided to walk away as soon as the bad results started to arrive, only two weeks later the Madrilenian coach was sacked and Cristóbal Parralo, who was the coach of Fabril at the time, stepped in.

And the last man to leave the project was Richard Barral, the former sporting director, who was under fire at the time for the poor form of Depor after the defeat in the derby. The fans were blaming them for not making the proper signings, starting with a decent goalkeeper.

He argued that, “I gave everything within the last three and a half years. This has just increased the feeling of fatigue in all the levels. We have reached a final agreement. We have been talking about it for a while and reached a definitive decision. The previous exit of Fernando Vidal has nothing to do with it. It’s the right moment to walk away.”

“The big disappointment came on this year. We were congratulated in August for the players we had, but the results cannot be defended. You can notice there was a growth in a sporting sense, another thing is the results, we were expecting for more. I feel a huge sadness right now. Sadness and nuisance. For me this was going to be the year of the take off. Let’s hope there still time, because as soon as the team chains a positive streak, it will go up, but they need to chain it.” He added.

The comment was that Barral left as he wanted to change Parralo and rely in the team, while president Tino Fernández wanted the opposite (changes with the players and keep Parralo on the job). Now Deportivo end the first round in liga with a feeling of loneliness at the sporting direction and with big doubts if the club is capable of changing the course for the remaining of the season.
