REVIEW: REAL SOCIEDAD 5 – DEPORTIVO 0 (LIGA)

03 Feb 2018
Disaster at Anoeta. Depor tried to play with an offensive approach, it ended allowing five goals and only completed one shot on target.

BEFORE THE GAME
Coach Cristóbal Parralo chose to play with a 4-2-3-1 formation. Michael Krohn-Dehli was making his debut and also Eneko Bóveda was starting. So, two of the three winter singings were part of the starting eleven.

Rubén Martínez was the goalkeeper, Bóveda covered the right side in defence, Luisinho performed on the left, Raúl Albentosa and Sidnei were the centre-backs. Guilherme joined Krohn-Dehli at midfield, Fede Cartabia attacked from the right wing, Lucas Pérez did it from the left, Carles Gil was the playmaker and Adrián López was the centre forward.

At Real Sociedad, coach Eusebio Sacristán sent a 4-3-3 scheme. Igor Zubeldía was replacing injured David Zurutuza, Alberto De La Bella covered the left side in defence, while Juanmi joined Mikel Oyarzabal and William José up front.

FIRST HALF
Poor first part for Deportivo, the team was inexistent in attack and had many problems in defence, only the lack of ideas prevented to see more opportunities for Real Sociedad, side that only completed one shot on target, but it was enough to claim the lead.

Real Sociedad controlled the game since the start, but they lacked depth as their plays were ending in crosses without major consequences. The first approximation was a shot from Oyarzabal that missed the target (3’). Three minutes later Illarramendi collected the ball inside the area, but his attempt was deflected to corner-kick.

With the passage of the minutes Depor started to improve, but lacked depth to create scoring opportunities. Neither Real Sociedad were generating anything, just a couple of crosses and a free-kick of Oyarzabal that missed the target (25’).

Depor first approximation came through two straight corner-kicks, in the first Lucas got the ball at the edge of the area and his shot was deflected (30’). It was going to be the lonely shot for the Galicians in the entire first part.

And then Real Sociedad scored after a double error from the new signings; Juanmi was alone at the left side of the area after Krohn-Dehli lost the ball at midfield, he released a volley that William José met at the far post to score from close range. Bóveda tried to play with the offside, but he just left alone the Brazilian attacker.

After the goal Depor fell down, the Basques had total control of the actions, but they were unable to create more clear opportunities, only a corner-kick in which Juanmi collected the ball inside the are to end sending it over the crossbar (43’). The Galicians were so poor that they only completed one shot, and it was Lucas, who only touched the ball in 11 opportunities.

SECOND HALF
The disaster was completed in the final half, just like in the game at Real Madrid, Depor gave up after the second goal. The team only completed one shot on target and the gam turned to be one of the worst presentations of the current campaign.

The final part started with a big chance for Odriozola, who’s attempt was cleared by Rubén Martínez to corner-kick (46’). Depor were still lost on the field, having problems to contain the fast attacks from the locals, and later it was inexistent in attack.

Parralo was desperate and allowed the entry of Emre Çolak for Carles Gil. Then Real Sociedad were close to score the second goal, De La Bella made a great play on the left and his cross was met by Xabi Prieto, who’s deflection hit the woodwork (55’)

And then it came the typical error of Rubén Martínez, he was misplaced in a long-range free-kick from Illarramendi, the ball bounced on the ground before going in with Depor’s goalie reacting late too. The game ended there as Depor gave up.

Lucas completed the first shot on target for Depor, and it came until minute 63. Krohn-Dehli assisted the Galician and his crossed shot was saved by Gerónimo Rulli (55’). Three minutes later Schär didn’t arrive in time after a combination with Lucas. Those were the only offensive plays of Depor in the game.

Despite these arrivals, Depor was a soulless team and Parralo ordered the second substitution. Bakkali replaced Cartabia, but only one minute later the third goal arrived. A long pass from the defence was collected by William José at the right wing, then he drilled a perfect pass to substitute Sergio Canales, who dribbled a rival to end scoring from the left side of the box.

Fede Valverde replaced Krohn-Dehli and the party continued at Anoeta as two more goals arrived. The fourth came in a corner-kick. The high cross from the left went into the far post, Bóveda collided with Schär and defender Elustondo was left alone and scored with a strong shot into the far post.

Bakkali replaced Cartabia and the last goal came with a defeated Deportivo allowing substitute Imanol Agirretxe to shot before Rubén, the keeper made the save, but Illarramendi was there to sentence a dead team with his second of the game.

AFTER THE GAME
The implosion of Deportivo continued with a new big loss, this time before a Real Sociedad that didn’t do too much, but that ended scoring five goals.  Again the team gave up after the second goal and again Ruben cost a goal.

Deportivo will remain in relegation one more week and now with coach Parralo on the edge of destitution. He didn’t want to resign after the game, but it still to be seen if he will be on the bench for the next meeting hosting Real Betis (Monday, 21h00 CET)
