PREVIEW: CELTA – DEPORTIVO (LIGA)

05 May 2018
Deportivo start to assume that it will play at Segunda on next season, it plays a tasteless derby facing a RC Celta more pending on who will be the coach for next season.

Referee: Carlos del Cerro Grande
Kick-off: 18h30 CET (Balaídos)

STATISTICS: THREE STRAIGHT DEFEATS WITH CELTA
This is the 117th edition of the Galician derby playing for a league competition; the series is favorable to RC with 47 victories, while Depor won 42 times. Los Celestes have won the last three derbies. The last victory of Depor over their neighbors was a 2-0 win on November 11, 2015 (2-0).

RC Celta still have options to qualify to Europe, but their last results have been poor. They have spent four games without victories and, actually, they have only added 6 of the last 18 points in dispute, two less than a Deportivo that’s already relegated.

The disastrous season of Depor already had the consequence of the relegation, Los Blanquiazules only won 6 games after 35 matchdays. It’s the worst number since the 6 wins of the campaign 1964/65, time when only 16 teams competed at Primera. Depor have three chances to at least win once and tie the 7 victories of the campaign 2015/16.

DEPORTIVO: UNCERTAINTY
The Galician derby arrives in a moment of uncertainty for Deportivo, the relegation was confirmed in the previous weekend and the club is trying to close Carmelo Del Pozo as the new sporting director. Many of the players won’t continue and the first rumours already appeared, like the ones linking Sidnei an Andone with Villarreal and Brighton respectively.

Clarence Seedorf has tried to keep the mind of the players in the game, this week he has been switching the hour of the trainings, starting early in the morning in the first days and later in the evening as it happened on Thursday and Friday. He has also tested different formations, though will keep playing with three centre midfielders and two attackers.

Team news: Sidnei and Eneko Bóveda are the players staying at the injury room. Muntari surpassed his muscle problems, but wasn’t picked. The other three men out for tactical reasons are Tytoń, Gerard Valentín and Carles Gil

Man to watch: Midfielder Michael Krohn-Dehli. The Danish has been a disappointment since been signed in the winter window, but he had some good minutes against FC Barcelona and now faces his former club searching for some redemption.

Picked players: (19) Rubén Martínez, Kóval (goalkeepers); Juanfran, Schär, Albentosa, Luisinho, Navarro (defenders); Pedro Mosquera, Fede Valverde, Borges, Guilherme, Krohn-Dehli, Çolak, Cartabia, Bakkali (midfielders); Adrián, Lucas Pérez, Andone & Borja Valle (attackers).

Predicted lineup: (4-3-1-2) Rubén Martínez - Juanfran, Albentosa, Schär, Luisinho – Krohn-Dehli, Guilherme, Borges – Çolak – Adrián, Lucas.

CELTA: DISAPPOINTMENT
There’s a sense of disappointment in Vigo for realizing that the team will hardly qualify for the Europa League. The fans had high expectations taking in mind the offensive potential had with Iago Aspas and Maxi Gómez. So, it explains why the major part of the public is against the continuity of coach Juan Carlos Unzué.

It’s not official his exit during the summer, but the major part of the media believes he will leave. Actually, on Thursday it was told that Leganés’ Asier Garitano is the predilected choice for next season. This news has been gathered the attention of the public, to the point that the derby is secondary subject.

Team news: Facundo Roncaglia (shoulder luxation) had an unexpected recovery and entered the roster for the game, but Iago Aspas (muscle) is skipping the derby despite completing the last training session. Celta B Dejan Dražić entered for him, he scored once against Fabril in the mini-derby played a fortnight ago. Nemanja Radoja (rib) and Emre Mor (lack of discipline) are the other casualties for the game.

Man to watch: Striker Maxi Gómez. One of the revelations in la liga, his partnership with Iago Aspas is one of the most productive ones at Primera (34 goals with them). And with Aspas out of the game, the Uruguayan will be the main reference up front.  He has scored 14 goals and provided 3 assists, one of those assists was in the first round game at the Riazor.

Picked players: (18) Sergio Álvarez, Rubén Blanco (goalkeepers); Hugo Mallo, Fontás, Róbert Mazáň, Jonny, Sergi Gómez, Cabral, Roncaglia (defenders); Tucu Hernández, Lobotka, Jozabed, Daniel Wass, Brais Méndez (midfielders); Lucas Boyé, Maxi Gómez, Dejan Dražić & Pione Sisto (attackers).

Predicted lineup: (4-2-3-1) Sergio Álvarez – Hugo Mallo, Cabral, Sergi Gómez, Jonny – Lobotka, Jozabed – Wass, Brais Méndez, Pione Sisto – Maxi Gómez.
