PABLO MARI SIGNS FOR DEPOR

02 Jul 2018
Deportivo announced on Sunday the signing of Pedro Mari. The centre-back comes loaned from Manchester City FC with the Galician side having a buyout option.

On Sunday, Pablo Marí Villar was announced as the newest addition of Deportivo. The centre-back will be 25 in August and is coming loaned from Manchester City FC. The deal includes a buyout option (apparently €750,000) and the player already completed the medicals.

Mari is a Valencian player that started his professional career at RCD Mallorca, He made 69 appearances with the B squad at Segunda B, though later he only played twice with the first team at Primera División: 29 minutes against Granada CF (December 7, 2011) and 4 minutes against Levante UD (May 05, 2012).

He then moved to Gimnástic Tarragona, side that was competing at Segunda B. He spent two seasons there and helped to achieve the promotion to Segunda A. His last season there (2015/16) was very complete making 35 league appearances scoring 3 goals.

At that point Manchester City FC were scanning the Spanish market and decided to bet on him, so they paid €500,000 for his transfer ad immediately was sent on loan to Girona FC (2016/17). The loan deal was for two years, but he failed there and only made 8 appearances at Segunda A.

The Valencian committed several errors and never was taken as a secure option, so the loan deal was cancelled and Mari was sent in a new loan spell, this time to NAC Breda at the Eredivisie (2017/18) and this time it was a success, because the centre-back not only was a fixed starter, but also the team captain due to his personality. He is tall (1.91m) and dominated te aerial game. By January his performance had called the attention of other clubs, The Daily Mail reported that a number of unnamed Premier League and Championship clubs were considering a move for him in the winter window.

But he stayed and NAC achieved the permanence and Mari was satisfied with the experience, as he told to AS in a interview in April of 2018, “I have good feelings with my experience here, actually my son was born here. Besides, it as a professional boom, because in very few places you are able to play all year long and was the captain for the first time… it has been a good experience and surely will repeat the opportunity in a foreign league, without doubt.”

And the situation changed for him in a matter of months, after been linked with a move to Fenerbahçe SK, he changed his mind and decided to return to Spain accepting the offer from Deportivo. This is the sixth reinforcement for Deportivo ahead of the season 2018/19 after the signings of goalkeeper Dani Giménez, left-back Sebastián Dubarbier, winger Pedro Sánchez, striker Christian Santos and the return of midfielder Álex Bergantiños.
