REVIEW: DEPORTIVO 2 – GRANADA 1 (LIGA)

25 Sep 2018
Quique González returned into the starting formation and scored twice to give a new victory at home. Depor were the superior side and deserved the result against a rival that only reacted until the end.

BEFORE THE GAME
Coach Natxo González surprised with the presence of Quique González at the starting eleven, the striker was returning after a couple of weeks out due to an injury and he left Fede Cartabia sat on the bench.

Dani Giménez was the starting keeper, David Simón covered the right side in defence, the left was for Saúl, Domingos Duarte and Pablo Mari were the centre-backs. Pedro Mosquera joined Vicente Gómez and Didier Moreno at midfield, Carles Gil was the playmaker behind Quique and Carlos Fernández.

At Granada CF, . Coach Diego Martínez presented the expected formation with Ángel Montoro performing at midfield. The references upfront were Álvaro Vadillo, Antonio Puertas and Adrián Ramos.

FIRST HALF
Very similar game to the one against Sporting, because the local team put the opportunities and the best football, while the rival did nothing in attack. Vicente Gómez was the best player and Quique González hit the post.

Deportivo started the game pushing and with Vicente Gómez pretty active, but Quique González failed a couple of times at the moment of controlling the ball, so Granada’s defensive line wasn’t suffering, at least within the first ten minutes.

The first shot on target came at minute 10, Quique González assisted Carles Gil and his low attempt was an easy catch for visiting goalie Rui Silva. Three minutes later a play of David Simón on the right ended with a shot of Carlos Fernández that was deflected to corner-kick by Granada’s goalie.

At minute 21, Pablo Mari headed a corner and Silva made the save, then Depor had a clear chance to score as Quique González hit the post. Vicente Gómez made the play, he assisted Saul and his cross was met by the striker, who hit the woodwork after a previous deflection by the keeper (23’).

At the middle of the half, Deportivo was the clear owner of the meeting, it was having the opportunities lead by a solid Vicente Gómez, while Granada CF weren’t finding the way to combine in offensive positions.

The first part ended with the fans upset as the referee didn’t want to whistle two penalties, one for a foul over Saúl (39’), later for a hand of José Martínez inside the area after a shot of Quique González (42’).

SECOND HALF
Deportivo found the aim as Quique González scored twice, it also helped the entries of Cartabia and Edu Expósito. The rival started to attack, but conceded two goals and only reacted until the end.

The final part was following the same path of the first, because Depor started pushing upfront against a Granada CF that was more worried in defending. The first chance for the visiting side in the game was a lateral free-kick of Vadillo in which he missed the target (52’).

Two minutes later, Adrián Ramos completed the first shot on target for his side, it was a low attempt saved by Dani Giménez.  Granada CF were starting to attack and Deportivo were stuck in the definition of the plays.

Carlos Fernández had a couple of chances and then Edu Expósito replaced Didier Moreno. The Colombian didn’t shine in the game and looked without ideas and the entry of the ex-Fabril helped to unclog a team that claimed the lead thanks to a gift.

Depor didn’t lost the patience and was awarded with a penalty after an error of Álex Martínez in the output of the ball, he fouled David Simón inside the area and the penalty was awarded. Quique González scored from the spot.

The second substitution at Depor was the entry of Cartabia for Carles Gil. The substitution also helped as the Argentine brought his vision on the pitch. Granada CF was trying to react, but found a second goal in a counterattack by Depor. Edu Expósito stole the ball in offensive positions released a low cross, Quique González ended the play with a marvelous striker crossing Silva.

A third goal could have arrived with the attempt of Carlos Fernández (84) that was saved by Silva. The game was ending when Ángel Montoro scored through a direct free-kick at the last minute. Álex Bergantiños was the last substitution replacing Quique González.

AFTER THE GAME
Great victory for Deportivo, the Galician side dominated the actions and deserved the win. Quique González hit the post in the first part, and in the second found two goals to secure the three points. The entries of Cartabia and Edu Expósito helped to unclog the team in attack.

The victory puts Depor in the promotion zone for the first time on the season; the Galicians are now four points behind leaders Málaga CF. The next game is the visit to Gimnástic Tarragona (Sunday, 20h30 CET).
