REVIEW: PONTEVEDRA 2 – FABRIL 2 (SEGUNDA B)

13 Nov 2018
Fabril wasted a two-goal lead visiting a team that reacted in the second part thanks to set-pieces. The lads have added 4 of the last 6 points, but remain in relegation.

BEFORE THE GAME
After making several modifications in the previous match, coach Sergio Pellicer only made one change at the starting lineup, it was the entry of Diego Villarres, a move that pulled Joni Montiel into the left wing.

The draw was a 4-2-3-1 figure. Álex Cobo was the starting goalie, Blas Alonso covered the right side in defence, Lucas Viña played on the left, Quique Fornos and Steve One were the centre-backs. Carlos López and Iago Gandoy were the centre midfielders, Joni Montiel attacked from the left wing, Víctor García did it from the right, Villares was the playmaker and Uxío Dapena was the centre forward.

The rival was Pontevedra CF, the Galician neighbor was aspiring to the promotion seats, but arrived to this meeting after only winning one of its last six games. Coach Luismi Areda was relying in Javi Pazos for the goals as top-scorer Mikel Arruabarrena was out injured. Ex-Fabril Jorge Romay started on the bench.

THE MATCH
Both halves were very different, in the first Fabril had things under control and claimed a two-goal lead, in the second the lads were close to net a third goal and later fell before the local pressure. The game had a good pace at the start, Pedro Vázquez had the first opportunity with a low shot saved by Álex Cobo (3’). Fabril replied with a long distance shot of Víctor García that went out (8’). At minute 11, Pedro Vázquez appeared again to release a strong shot that went over the crossbar.

And then Fabril found the first goal of the game. Steve One was having the ball at the left side, almost at midfield, then he sent a pass into the path of Joni Montel, who unleashed a rocket from the edge of the area past local goalie Edu Sousa.

Pontevedra CF were pushing for the equalizer, but Depor’s lads were looking comfortable on the pitch, because they weren’t facing pressure at midfield at the moment of having the ball and were also finding a lot of space in attack, so they were having long possessions.

The locals increased the pressure within the last fifteen minutes, but their combinations were ending in crosses without finding a receiver. Fabril’s possessions were no longer consuming time, but the lads weren’t suffering and were even close to score the second goal.

At minute 33, a corner-kick of Montiel couldn’t be connected by One inside the box, the loose ball reached the path of Montiel, who attempted a low shot that was deflected and found by Uxio at the box, and his shot was deflected again with the ball passing close to the near post of Edu Sousa.

So, it wasn’t strange to see Fabril finding the second goal before the break. Diego Villares started the play on the right, he made a long pass to Lucas Viña, who was along enough on the right to run and released a drilling cross into the box, Uxio left the ball pass and Villares arrived from behind to send the ball into the near post despite been between three defenders.

Pontevedra CF tried to react within the last ten minutes of the half, their best chance was a double save of Álex Cobo before the short-distance attempts of Kevin and Pedro Vázquez (41’).

The locals had more intensity within the first minutes of the second part, but they lacked ideas and depth and Fabril were holding on. The best chance for Pontevedra CF in this stage of the game was a shot of Álex González that went out (51’)

Fabril were also having chances to score the third goal, Uxio should have scored in a one-on-one action against Edu Sousa, but the keeper cleared his shot with the leg (47’). That miss was going to cost two points, because the locals made the final push and the entry of Romay was the impulse that the team needed.

Meanwhile, Pellicer reacted too late and the changes never had an impact at the team, Javi Cobo and Juanje replaced Montiel and Villares, but the locals scored twice in the middle of both substitutions.

And both goals were scored after a second straight corner-kick for the locals. In the first Romay headed in a cross from Javi Pazos. In the second, Berrocal connected the ball and the rebound was found by Javi Pazos, who scored from the goal line with the heel.

The final minutes were exciting, because anything could have happened. Pontevedra CF continued pushing an Fabril found again enough cracks for the counterattack. Adrián Castro replaced Uxío, he had the last chance for Fabril after missing a cross from Blas Alonso (88’), one minute later Berrocal was firing from the left side of the area and Álex Cobo made the save. Coach Pellicer as sent off din the stoppage time for leaving his zone on the pitch.

AFTER THE GAME
Tasteless point for Fabril. Uxío had the 0-3 at the middle of the second part, but the final push from Pontevedra CF earned a point for them. The problem is that the team continues in a complicate situation, currently tied in points with Rápido de Bouzas at the bottom and already six points below safety. The next game is the visit of Las Palmas Atlético to Abegondo (Sunday, 12h00 CET).

Comments from Pellicer: “At half-time we tried to keep the same idea, which was to look for the rival's goal, but we must be clear about our situation. Mentally we weren't fine, Pontevedra pressed and we had problem having the ball. We didn't have the ball and Pontevedra deserved something, they could even have won. The first half was great for us, unexpected, but showing what we worked during the week. we have a lot of work to do, when the team wants it can achieve things. We need continuity and clear the mind ahead of next game.”
