Depor dropped two points in a game with two very different halves; CD Numancia was harmless in the first part, but it was good enough in the second to complicate an asleep Deportivo.

David Simón wasn’t fit to play after a late scan on Saturday, he ended out of the game and coach Natxo González chose to play with Eneko Bóveda taking his place. The rest was the expected 4-3-1-2 formation.

Dani Giménez was the starting keeper, Bóveda covered the right side of the defence, Saúl García played on the left, Domingos Duarte and Pablo Mari covered the central positions. The trio at midfield was composed by Pedro Mosquera, Vicente Gómez and Edu Expósito. Carles Gil was the playmaker, while Quique González and Borja Valle were the centre forwards.

At CD Numancia, coach Aritz López Garai presented the expected lineup as Nacho Sánchez was fit to play. Fran Villalba, Yaw Yeboah and Higinio Marín were the other references in attack.

Easy first part for Deportivo, because despite CD Numancia had the ball, it was the local side the one creating danger. The lagoons on the visiting defence allowed the Galicians to score twice and also to hit the post in another opportunity.

The game started with a Deportivo pushing strong in attack, once again the game was focused on the left through Saúl.  Precisely a cross from the left-back was the first chance in the game, Edu Expósito headed the ball and it went close to the near post (6’). One minute later Carles Gil was sending the ball over the crossbar.

The goal was only a matter of time and arrived soon, Saúl released a cross from the left, a defender deflected the ball and it reached the path of Edu Expósito, who scored with a strong shot from the edge of the area.

CD Numancia tried to react and their first chance was a throw-in in which Yaw Yeboah found the ball inside the area and his strong hot was blocked by Dani Giménez (10’). The visiting side was having big problems in the transitions defence-attack and in in the end it only allowed the counterattack for Deportivo.

In the following minutes the pace was lower, CD Numancia started to have a better ball possession, but they didn’t create any danger and, at the same time, were leaving big cracks at the back, so Depor were looking dangerous in every offensive move as the local players were finding plenty of room to move forward.

To make things worse for CD Numancia, they allowed the second goal in a big defensive error. Pape Diamanka tried to pass the ball to keeper Juan Carlos Sánchez, but instead assisted Borja Valle, who scored with a drilling and crossed shot.

Pape Diamanka tried to revert his error with a low shot, but Dani Giménez made the save with the leg (32’). The visiting side had the ball in the last frame of the half (58% in the first half), but their lagoons in defence were so big that Depor were closer to score the third goal.

And it was Borja Valle who was close to score again at minute 35, Carles Gil made a long run on the right and assisted the striker at the left side of the area, he attempted a drilling shot that was deflected by a rival and ended hitting the far post.

Things radically changed in the second part, CD Numancia switched the system into a 4-4-2 and Depor thought that the game was solved, it allowed a goal and tried to react, but only to see the rival scoring again. Saúlwas sent off in a play that wasn’t even foul.

CD Numancia started strong in the final part and Higinio Marín hit the post in a free-kick action, he headed the cross into the area and the ball met the crossbar (46’). One minute later Pape Diamanka attempted a low shot that was saved by Dani Giménez. This new attitude was possible because Alain Oyarzun replaced Nacho Sánchez.

Depor replied with three straight corner-kick, the most dangerous one ended with a header of Quique González that was cleared by Juan Carlos Sánchez (51’). But CD Numancia was the side scoring the next goal in the game.

A cross from the left was headed by Unai Medina as the defender arrived before Borja Valle, the ball went in by the top corner of the goal. Precisely, the cross was released by Alain Oyarzun, the man that ended changing the game.

The visiting side started to push forward and the locals were in trouble. Natxo didn’t like what he saw and ordered the first chance, Álex Bergantiños replaced Mosquera. Truly the change didn’t have an impact in the game, but Depor started to attack.

At minute 67, a combination inside the area ended with Bóveda trying to chip the ball over the keeper and ended sending it over the bar. Then Carles Gil had two chances after combinative plays and in both he sent the ball out (69’ & 71’). Then Edu Expósito attempted a shot at minute 72 and it was blocked by Juan Carlos.

But it was CD Numancia the side that was going to score again, and again with a cross from the left by Alain Oyarzun, the ball passed over the defence, Dani Giménez reacted late and somehow Pape Diamanka found it to score at the far post.

Depor had wasted a two-goal lead and Natxo was in panic, Michael Krohn-Dehli and Christian Santos entered the field for Edu Expósito and Carles Gil, but it was too late. Depor didn’t improve despite having two chances to score in set-pieces.

In the first Pablo Mari headed a corner-kick and Juan Carlos made a great save (80’), and the last was a free-kick of Vicente Gómez in which no one managed to push the ball in (90+3’). Between both plays, Saúl was sent off with two yellow cards for supposedly elbowing Fran Villalba, but the action wasn’t even a foul.

Frustration at the Riazor. Depor were clearly superior, but wasted a two-goal advantage before a willful rival that seized the mental lagoon of a team that didn’t react properly in the final part. Natxo also failed with his changes as it never improved the performance of the team.
Deportivo will end the matchday out of direct promotion after the victory of Granada CF (0-1 at Nástic). The next game is the visit of Real Zaragoza to the Riazor (Sunday, 20h45 CET).
