NOTES FROM THE GAME VS TENERIFE

04 Feb 2019
Disappointing game by Deportivo. A team that lacked ideas to attack, a questionable lineup, mainly the trio at midfield, due to the circumstances and the poor form of Quique González.

The five nots from the game V. CD Tenerife:

1- Impotence: Deportivo left a feeling of impotence on the field, the team lacked speed and ideas to unclog the game against a rival that didn’t concede too much space. It also suffered with the counterattacks by the Canarians. The absence of Carles Gil and Cartabia are more noticed in games like this, because it is when Depor need players with the vision to pass the ball where there’s no space, and the game arrived just when the first was transferred and the second wasn’t totally fit to play.  In the end centre-backs Domingos Duarte (86) and Pablo Mari (74) completed more passes than Edu Expósito (43), something that demonstrates the problems to move forward had in this match.

2- Álex and Didier Moreno playing at the same time: Natxo González wad criticized for not allowing Mosquera to play. He is supposed to be the substitute of Vicente Gómez, but the coach preferred to play with Álex Bergantiños and Didier Moreno, two midfielders that are considered as “defensive”, just in the game where Depor needed more ideas at midfield territory. Moreno had the worst performance after only completing 37 passes.

3- Debut for Nahuel Leiva: New signing Nahuel Leiva only completed one training session after arriving to A Coruña late on Friday, but the circumstances pulled the coach to give him some minutes, and the true is that he passed unnoticed. In 12 minutes on the pitch he only completed three passes.

4- The falling grace by Quique González: Truly Depor didn’t play a good game, but it should have won for having more chances than the rival, more precisely it had seven opportunities to score and four of them were for Quique González, who has lost his state of grace. The striker remains as the top-scorer at Depor with ten goals, but six of the goals came in September and since them the attacker has lost precision. In this game he should have scored in the throw-in at minute 83, and later in the loose ball after Cartabia’s free-kick at the last minute.

5- Lack of goal: It’s hard to talk of lack of goal when Depor remain as the best scorer in the league (35), but the stats say that the Galicians have remained scoreless in four of the last six games, so Natxo González needs to recover the freshness in attack.
