Depor are now seven points away from direct promotion, since the introduction of the playoff no one has been able to revert such difference in order to end among the first two places.

The painful defeat against UD Las Palmas, combined with the victories of Granada CF and CA Osasuna, have left Deportivo in a delicate situation. Because the Galicians are now seven points under direct promotion with only thirteen matchdays to go.

Since the playoff figure was introduced at Segunda for the season 2010/11, no one has been able to overcome such a difference with only thirteen matchdays remaining. Actually, only once a team that was among the first two places by matchday 29 ended dropped from direct promotion.

And that happened during the season 2012/13, at the time Elche and UD Almeria were leading Segunda. Villarreal CF was fifth at the standings, five points under direct promotion, and the Valencians were able to add 30 of the last 39 points in dispute to end as the runners-up in the league.

Deportivo are now closer to be dropped from the playoff zone than of reaching direct promotion, because seventh place RC Mallorca is coming four points under Los Blanquiazules. It’s a delicate situation for a team that, despite the situation, it has only been trailing for 249 minutes in the entire season, the second-best mark in the league only above Granada CF (230).

And now Depor has to close the season facing teams at mid-table or fighting to survive, precisely the ones that have been more difficult for Natxo González and his players. Of the twelve games that Depor must play only five are against direct rivals for the promotion: UD Almeria, Real Oviedo CA Osasuna, Cádiz CF and RCD Mallorca.
