REVIEW: FABRIL 3 – UNIONISTAS 3 (SEGUNDA B)

29 Apr 2019
Two teams without anything at stake playing an exciting game, mainly within a final stretch of fifteen minutes that had of everything.

BEFORE THE GAME
Luisito was having the casualties of Raúl González, who was suspended, and Bicho, who was injured. There were several changes at the lineup though the coach kept the system with three centre-backs.

Álex Cobo covered the goal, Jorge Valín played at the right side of the defence, Ignacio Abeledo did it at the left, the centre-backs were Mujaid Sadick, Steve One and Gaizka Martínez. Sébastien Salles-Lamonge and Iago Gandoy were the midfielders, then Guillermo May, Jonathan Montiel and Juan Jesús Argüez ‘Juanje’ composed the trident in attack.

The game had no value in this final stretch of the season, because Fabril were already relegated and also because Unionistas de Salamanca CF had nothing to play for. They already secured the permanence an had no options to qualify for the playoffs. Coach Roberto Aguirre was relying in Carlos de la Nava for the goals, he is one of the top-scorers at the team (5 goals).

THE MATCH
The game started with a blocked shot of Montiel that passed close to the far post of visiting goalie Carlos Molina (1’). The locals had the initiative and looked dangerous through their passing game.  At minute 5, Salles-Lamonge sent the ball over the crossbar in a direct free-kick action.

Two minutes later Guillermo May was about to head a corner-kick, but a rival arrived first and sent the ball out. The Galician lads continued dominating the game, easily stealing the ball at midfield and having depth in attack, though they weren’t ending the plays properly.

At minute 13, Juanje made a great play on the right, but his cross couldn’t be connected by May. Two minutes later a curved shot of Salles-Lamonge was saved by Molina.  Up to this point Fabril have had 5 opportunities within the first 15 minutes, but then the game changed and Unionistas had their first big chance, it was a cross from the left headed by De La Nava and that was cleared over the bar by Álex Cobo (25’)

Fabril were able to break the dominance of the visiting side, but at the same time the lads didn’t recover the depth of the first minutes, so the game was fluid and at the same boring, because it was lacking scoring opportunities. Their next opportunity was a blocked shot to Juanje (35’), in the resulting corner-kick May headed the ball out.

And Fabril were going to reach half-time with the advantage on the scoresheet; it was a great play by Valin on the right flank combining with Montiel, the Juvenile player released a low cross that was missed by a defender and Ignacio Abeledo met the ball at the far post to score with a low attempt.

The start of the second half was paused, because Unionistas tried to push, but it wasn’t finding the way to break Fabril’s defence. But they found the equalizer in an isolated play. Carlos De La Nava collected the ball at the edge of the area and scored through a curved and precise shot into the far post.

Fabril weren’t working, so Luisito made the first substitution and Uxío Dapena replaced Juanje. The change didn’t work, because the Galicians were lacking arrival and Unionistas were closer to score.

At minute 66, a header of Garrido ended with the ball hitting the crossbar, then Víctor García replaced May.  And this time the modification had an instant impact, because the winger was going to score the second goal. Iago Gandoy made the play at the edge of the area, he assisted Abeledo with a great pass into the left and wing and his cross was deflected by Víctor at the box.

Then the game became frantic within the last fifteen minutes. First, Fabril were awarded with a very doubtful penalty. Steve One was searching for the ball during a corner-kick and fell after been backwards the ball, the referee whistled the penalty and Montiel failed as his shot was deflected by Molina (77’).

And from the 3-1 situation the game passed into the 2-3 as Unionistas pulled two goals in isolated plays at the edge of the area. And both were scored by substitutes. In the first Haritz Albisua found the ball after a rebound, his low shot hit a defender and fooled Álex Cobo, then it was Cristian Portilla, who scored through a strong shot into the far post.

Fabril didn’t deserve to lose and the lads were going to rescue a point. After an attempt of Montiel that hit the post, the locals had two corner-kicks in favour, in the second One rescued the ball and made a small pass with the head to Víctor García, who scored with a crossed shot past a Molina that reacted too late.

AFTER THE GAME
Weird 3-3 draw at Abegondo between two team fighting for nothing. Fabril was better in the first part, but were too passive in the second. The end was frantic, with four goals, two ball hitting the woodwork and one missed penalty, all of this in a frame of 15 minutes. Three games are remaining on the season and the next one is the visit to Cultural Leonesa (Saturday, 19h00 CET)
