PREVIEW: ZARAGOZA – DEPORTIVO (LIGA)

04 May 2019
Martí repeats system as Deportivo targets the playoff zone. Real Zaragoza are living a disappointing season and are still trying to secure the permanence.

Referee: Iñaki Vicandi Garrido
Kick-off: 18h00 CET (La Romareda)

STATISTICS: FAILING AT HOME
Real Zaragoza are having a disappointing season and big part of that has to do with their poor home form. After 18 games at La Romareda the Aragonians have only won six times and the 24 points added in this condition represent the fifth worst mark in the league, only above Extremadura UD (23), CD Lugo (23), Gimnástic Tarragona (22) and Córdoba CF (22).

Meanwhile, and despite the poor form of Deportivo within the last three months, the Galicians remain as the fourth best visiting team at Segunda División. Los Blanquiazules have added 26 points in 18 visits, mark only below Málaga CF (30), Granada CF (29) and Albacete Balompié (28).

This is the 34th visit of Deportivo to Real Zaragoza playing for a league competition; they have won in 10 opportunities a La Romareda. The latest game there was the 0-1 win of the Primera season (2013/14), which was the first victory after seven games without defeating Real Zaragoza on the road.

DEPORTIVO: FINDING A PATTERN
Coach José Luis Martí will repeat the system after the victory over CD Numancia, during his first three games in charge the Majorcan coach has missed players due to injuries and suspensions, so he had to make changes from game to game, now he will present the same 4-4-2 formation with the novelty that Pablo Mari returns from suspension and goes directly into the starting eleven.

Team news: Martí included Michelle Somma on the roster as he was waiting for the resolution of the RFEF regarding the appeal of his red card. David Simón didn’t arrive in time and stays at the injury room together with Krohn-Dehli. Christian Santos, Dubarbier, Didier Moreno and Vítor Silva are out for tactical reasons.

Man to watch: Striker Carlos Fernández. Deportivo is a different team when the Andalusian attacker is on the pitch, now he expects to be healthy in this last stretch of the season in order to help the club towards the promotion.

Picked players: (19) Dani Giménez, Adrián Ortolá (goalkeepers); Eneko Bóveda, Domingos Duarte, Michelle Somma, Pablo Mari, Iñigo López, Diego Caballo, Saúl García (defenders); Edu Expósito, Álex Bergantiños, Pedro Mosquera, Vicente Gómez, Pedro Sánchez, Fede Cartabia (midfielders); Nahuel Leiva, Quique González, Carlos Fernández & Borja Valle (attackers).

Predicted lineup: (4-4-2) Dani Giménez – Bóveda, Domingos Duarte, Pablo Mari, Caballo – Cartabia, Álex Bergantiños, Edu Expósito, Borja Valle - Quique González, Carlos Fernández.

ZARAGOZA: DISAPPOINTMENT
Real Zaragoza have been one of the biggest disappointments on the Segunda season, after ending third last season missing the promotion in the playoff and with a young team lead by Natxo González, now that promising team is underperforming, to the point of changing the coach in three different opportunities (the current one is ex-Depor Victor Fernández) and been at this point still trying to secure the permanence.

The sense of disappointment is so big that even reached the celebration of Marc Gual, who scored a hat-trick on the weekend against Córdoba CF and was proud for it in social media, only to be criticized by the public for his poor performance all season long after coming loaned from RCD Espanyol. This is the kind of heat environment that Deportivo are going to meet at La Rosaleda, a stadium in which the public can put pressure either on the rival or on their own team.

Team news: Centre midfielder James Igbekeme trained with the team during the week, but wasn’t included in the roster. The Nigerian player has been out for two weeks after suffering a knock against AD Alcorcón. The other three players out for injury reasons are playmaker Alberto Soro (ankle sprain), centre-back Chechu Dorado (Soleus) and left-back Daniel Lasure (stress fracture).

Man to watch: Midfielder Iñigo Eguaras. The arrival of Víctor Fernández has brought a more starring role to this Navarran player, who is responsible of distributing the ball in the transition defence-attack. Real Zaragoza need him on shape in order to aspire to the victory. After been sent off against CA Osasuna on matchday 27, he has been a starter in 7 of the next 8 games and only once was replaced in that frame.

Picked players: (18) Cristian Álvarez, Álvaro Ratón (goalkeepers); Diogo Verdasca, Alberto Guitián, Carlos Nieto, Julián Delmás, Álex Muñoz (defenders); Jorge Pombo, Javi Ros, Iñigo Eguaras, Raúl Guti, Diego Aguirre, Alberto Zapater, Pep Biel (midfielders) Miguel Linares, Álvaro Vázquez, Marc Gual & Giorgi Papunashvili (attackers)

Predicted lineup: (4-3-2-1) Cristian Álvarez - Delmás. Guitián, Verdasca, Nieto - Eguaras, Javi Ros, Pombo  - Guti, Álvaro Vázquez – Marc Gual.
