REVIEW: ZARAGOZA 0 – DEPORTIVO 1 (LIGA)

05 May 2019
Big win for a Deportivo that’s back in the playoff zone. The Galician didn’t play bad, but it only completed one shot on target, and luckily it was the goal of Pedro Sánchez.

BEFORE THE GAME
Saúl García was the big surprise at the 4-4-2 formation of José Luis Martí. The Cantabrian player made his previous appearance in March (0-0 Vs. UD Almeria) and was now playing at the left-back position.

Dani Giménez was the starting keeper, Eneko Bóveda covered the right ide of the defence, Saúl played on the left, the centre-backs were Pablo Mari and Domingos Duarte. The duo at midfield was composed by Álex Bergantiños and Edu Expósito, Fede Cartabia attacked from the right wing, Borja Valle did it from the left, then Carlos Fernández and  Quique González were the centre forwards.

At Real Zaragoza, Víctor Fernández made some adjustments. He presented a 4-4-2 formation with Alberto Zapater at midfield and with Giorgi Papunashvili attacking at the right wing. Álvaro Vázquez and Marc Gual were the duo in attack.

FIRST HALF
Deportivo had a poor start in the game, contrary to what happened in the previous three games with Martí, the Galicians didn’t feel comfortable and suffered after missing passes at midfield. Later they grew in the game to the point of been better than the rival, but it only created one clear chance to score.

No clear chances to score at the start of the game, but it was entertaining as both teams were attempting a fast game based in the counterattack. Depor were having problems passing the ball and therefore allowed quick attacks by the locals, like the shot of Nieto that went out after a pass from Álvaro Vázquez (6’).

One minute later Álvaro Vázquez attempted a strong shot after a bad play by Cartabia and Dani Giménez made the save.  Then Depor decided to give the initiative to Zaragoza, the Aragonians were trying, but had problems to surpass the visiting defence. Meanwhile, the Galicians weren’t creating anything through the counterattack.

Depor only started to show up at the middle of the half, and it was when Quique González and Carlos Fernández started to combine. At minute 22, a combination between both attackers ended with a crossed shot of Borja Valle that hit the arm of Verdasca when he was on the ground and no penalty was given.

At minute 27, a good combination at the left wing ended with Quique González releasing a strong cross that local goalie Cristian Álvarez deflected before the presence of Carlos Fernández. Deportivo weren’t looking too dangerous, but at least it had cleared the dominion by the locals.

The Galicians started to have longer ball possessions, but the finalization was poor. Like the long play at minute 34 that ended with a shot of Borja Valle that went wide. The first half ended with the best opportunity for Depor, Carlos Fernández released a low cross from the left, Borja Valle collected the ball at the edge of the area and his strong shot passed close to the crossbar (42’).

SECOND HALF
Deportivo had a solid start, controlling the game and lacking opportunities, but the suffering came at the end. Zaragoza had a triple chance and later Pedro Sánchez came out from the bench in order to score the winning goal.

The final part started with a game that lacked opportunities, but Depor were well positioned. Making long plays with countless passes and lacking depth at the moment of attempting the transitions. The first chance to score in the second half begun after an error of Saúl in attack, it allowed a counterattack that ended with a volley of Pep Biel that was cleared by Dani Giménez (60’).

Deportivo started to look imprecise, making bad decisions in attack and once again giving the ball to the rival, something that allowed the local counterattack.  The first substitution at Depor was the entry of Nahuel Leiva for Borja Valle. Again the winter signing didn’t leave a good impression as he barely was a factor.

Then Zaragoza started to push and substitute Raúl Guti was close to score with a low shot that went close to the near post of Dani Giménez (71’). And four minutes later the locals had the big chance to win the game.

It was a triple opportunity, Pep Biel fired from the edge of the area, Dani Giménez couldn’t contain the ball and his deflection went into the right corner of the box, Marc Gual collected the ball there and his short-range attempt was miraculously saved by Depor’s keeper, then Biel tried to put the ball back into the box and this time Pablo Mari sent the ball over the crossbar.

Pedro Sánchez replaced Carlos Fernández and Zaragoza was the best team at this height in the game, but it was going to be Depor the side scoring the only goal in the match. Edu Expósito had the ball at the left wing in a long play by the Galicians, then he attempted a drilling pass into the right side of the area, Pedro Sánchez was there to cross Cristian Álvarez with a perfect attempt into the far post.

Vicente Gómez replaced Cartabia and Zaragoza sought for the equalizer, but their only opportunity in the last stretch of the game was a volley of Marc Gual that went over the crossbar (90+4’).

AFTER THE GAME
Big result for Deportivo, the Galicians didn’t deserve to win, despite they looked solid in large stages of the game the true is that Zaragoza had more opportunities, but Depor were 100% effective as their only shot on target ended in goal.

Back-to-back wins for Deportivo and the Galicians are back in the playoff zone waiting to see what the direct rivals do in this matchday. The next game is important as direct rival Cádiz CF visit the Riazor (Sunday, 16h00 CET).
