MATCHDAY 41: ONE PROMOTION, ONE RELEGATION

07 Jun 2019
The penultimate matchday on the season was the longest one and it crowned the promotion of Granada and sentenced the relegated clubs to Segunda B.

Matchday 41 has been the longest one on the season, the death of José Antonio Reyes provoked the delay of seven games and the matchday started on Friday and ended until Tuesday. And it was exciting as things were defined within the final minutes of the games. In the end the direct promotion was defined and also the final club going down to Segunda B.

Between Friday and Sunday’s noon, the three games with nothing at stake were played, CA Osasuna overcame Córdoba CF (2-3), Gimnástic Tarragona surprised AD Alcorcón (0-1) and UD Las Palmas and UD Almeria tied without goals.

The excitement came on Tuesday; Granada CF conquered the direct promotion without needing to face RCD Mallorca, they managed to rescue a point after a late goal at Son Moix (1-1), but the second place was already secured for them as Albacete Balompié was defeated at home by Málaga CF (1-2), that was their second home defeat on the campaign.

More dramatic was the situation of Deportivo. The Galicians had countless opportunities, but didn’t manage to beat Elche CF on the road (0-0), but still they managed to climb to the sixth position after Cádiz unexpectedly lost at home with Extremadura UD (0-1), a weird goal in the first half was enough to defeat a team that has now chained six games without victories.

Real Oviedo have a slight chance to reach the playoff after the most dramatic game on the matchday: 4-3 win over Rayo Majadahonda. The Asturians were losing 1-3 by minute 80, but pulled three goals in a frame of 15 minutes (5 minutes of aggregate time) to rescue the victory.

The situation at the top of the standings:

place team points GF GA
1 Osasuna 84 58 35
2 Granada 76 50 27
3 Málaga 71 48 31
4 Albacete 71 54 35
5 Mallorca 68 53 37
6 Deportivo 65 48 32
7 Cádiz 64 53 35
8 Oviedo 63 48 47

The chaos was higher for Rayo Majadahonda as they were caressing the salvation, they were adding three points plus the last three of the game with FC Reus, forcing everyone else to add victories in the final matchday, but they lost everything in a stroke of a pen as the result in Oviedo has defined the relegation race, forcing the Madrilenians to go back to Segunda B after only one season at the second tier.

The other clubs involved in the fight to avoid demotion were carefully following the news at other stadiums, so it wasn’t a surprise to see the games CD Lugo Vs. CD Tenerife and Real Zaragoza Vs. CD Numancia ending in goalless draws.

The final picture in the relegation zone:

place team points GF GA
18 Lugo 46 42 50
19 Majadahonda 42 45 61
20 Nástic 35 29 62
21 Córdoba 34 48 77
22 Reus 0 16 47

MATCHDAY 42: THE PLAYOFFS
The Segunda season is only pending to define the sixth place and the final positions for the playoffs. Málaga CF want to end third in order to have the advantage and it will be enough by replaying the result of Albacete Balompié. The Andalusians host Elche CF, while Los Manchegos visit UD Almeria.

Albacete will only be third if they add more points than Málaga, but in no case they can end below the fourth place. Fifth place RCD Mallorca are only three points behind, but they lost the particular series with Albacete, so the Majorcans can only end fifth and for it they only need to add a point visiting Extremadura UD.

Meanwhile, Deportivo only need to secure a victory over already relegated Córdoba CF in order to secure the sixth place. The Galicians can even end fifth if they win and if Mallorca lose. The only chance of Cádiz CF is to beat Sporting Gijón on the road and then to see Depor failing. More remote is the situation of Real Oviedo, they visit champions CA Osasuna and need the victory plus a defeat of Deportivo and to see Cádiz CF not winning.

The seven matches involving the playoff race are played on Saturday; the remaining three games take place on Sunday: Gimnástic Tarragona Vs. CD Lugo; CD Numancia Vs. UD Las Palmas & CD Tenerife Vs. Real Zaragoza.
