There were no changes in the last matchday of the season; Depor kept the sixth place and will face Málaga CF in the first round.

The last Segunda matchday lacked excitement, matchday 41 defined the last relegation and the second team clinching direct promotion, therefore the only thing at stake was to see who was going to be the sixth place and the final position of the four clubs going into the playoff.

In the end the matchday was played without major surprises. Cádiz CF played a new bad game and was trailing early in the visit to Sporting Gijón, they ended losing 1-0 and Deportivo never felt the pressure to score against Córdoba CF.

The Galicians ended the regular season with a victory (2-0) and the third side fighting for the sixth position, Real Oviedo, lost in their visit to CA Osasuna (1-0). Therefore, Depor would have even qualified to the playoff if they have lost with Córdoba CF. Actually, Los Blanquiazules were more pending to see RCD Mallorca failing in order to end fifth (0-0 at Extremadura UD), in the end there were no changes in the position of the four teams in the playoff zone.

The final situation in the promotion zone:

place team points GF GA
1 Osasuna 87 59 35
2 Granada 79 52 28
3 Málaga 74 51 31
4 Albacete 71 54 38
5 Mallorca 69 53 37
6 Deportivo 68 50 32
7 Cádiz 64 53 36
8 Oviedo 63 48 48

The rules say that the third place (Málaga CF) have to face the sixth position (Deportivo) in the first round. The other tie is between third spot Albacete Balompié and fourth place RCD Mallorca. The first-leg is played in midweek in the stadium of the team in the lower position, and the returning game is on the weekend.

Another important thing in the rules is that the winner of the series is the side winning in the aggregate score with the visiting goals counting as double in case of a tie. If both sides still tied after 180 minutes, then there will be extra time in the second game, and if the ties persists, then the winner will be the side in the better position at the standings.

The latter is a change in the rules made a couple of year ago, before there were penalty shootouts, now it is defined by the position of the teams in the regular season. This means that Málaga CF start the playoff with a small advantage as they only need to clinch four clean sheets in order to seal the promotion to Primera División. It also means that Depor need to win two series having the advantage in the aggregate score as they are the ones at the lower position.
