REVIEW: RAYO VALLECANO 3 – DEPORTIVO 1 (LIGA)

02 Sep 2019
Another disappointment on the road; Deportivo played a terrible first half, and later allowed a late goal when it had deserved more in the second part.

BEFORE THE GAME
Some novelties at the starting lineup of Juan Antonio Anquela, Fabril’s Mujaid Sadick was a starter at the centre of the defence, while Samuele Longo was debuting as a starter leading the attack. Samuele Longo was going to start, but he suffered an injury during the warming up and he was replaced by Borja Galán.

Dani Giménez was the goalkeeper, David Simón covered the right side in defence, the left was for Diego Caballo. Meanwhile, Vassilios Lampropoulos joined Mujaid at the centre of the defence. Álex Bergantiños and Gaku Shibasaki performed at midfield, Borja Galán attacked from the right wing, Borja Valle did it from the left, Ager Aketxe was the playmaker and Koné was the centre forward.

At Rayo Vallecano, Paco Jémez didn’t allow the debut of new signing Antonio Luna as a starter, instead Sergio Akieme performed at the left side of the defence. Adrián Embarba, Óscar Trejo and Andrés Martín were the references in attack.

FIRST HALF
Poor first half by Deportivo. Los Blanquiazules started with a goal, but later the team showed the same pale impression of last week. Rayo scored twice seizing the passive attitude of the defence. In attack the team only reacted within the final minutes.

The game started with Deportivo earning a corner-kick and scoring an early goal, Ager Aketxe had a direct free-kick attempt and his shot was poorly defended by Alberto García [the ball hit the ground before reaching his path]. The first chance for the locals came at minute 12, it was a corner-kick in which Álvaro García found the ball at the box, but his crossed shot went out. He was alone and it was going to be a warning of what was coming next.

Rayo increased the pressure and Álvaro García was close to score in what turned to be a double save by Dani Giménez. In the resulting corner-kick Depor’s defence committed a new error defending the set-piece.  Embarba released the cross and Mario Suárez was alone at the box to head the ball in.

At this point in the game, Depor have lost control of the actions. Rayo Vallecano were finding the cracks at the defence and the offensive efforts were only depending in isolated plays by Borja Galán. The Madrilenians were missing aim and weren’t transforming their superiority into scoring chances.

But they found the aim to score the second goal. Embarba sent a cross from the left, the ball reached the path of Álvaro García, Lampropoulos reacted late and the local attacker dribbled Mujaid inside the box to end crossing Dani Giménez.

The performance of Depor was so bad that the half ended with a passing accuracy of 42%, at least the Galicians improved at the end and were close to tie in two opportunities. In the first Borja Galán missed the target firing from inside the area (38’) and later Mujaid sent the ball out after an acrobatic attempt in a corner-kick (39’).

SECOND HALF
Deportivo played much better in the final part, it created opportunities, but simply failed to seized them and later allowed a goal after new poor defended cross. Anquela made weird changes, David Sánchez debuted and Álex Bergantiños ended playing as a centre-back.

The second half started with a strong Deportivo. The first play was a lateral free-kick of Gaku that Mujaid couldn’t connect (47’). Two minutes later Aketxe attempted a low volley from the edge of the area and Alberto blocked the ball.

Deportivo continued insisting and Aketxe could have scored the equalizer, he collected a low cross from the left released by Caballo and he was alone inside the area, and his shot was blocked by a defender (50’).

The Galicians were much better and Koné caressed the equalizer after heading a cross from David Simón, and Alberto made the save at the goal line. The first substitution at Depor was the entry of Vicente Gómez for Gaku, then Christian Santos claimed the spot of Borja Valle.

Then David Sánchez debuted replacing Mujaid. Depor kept the 4-2-3-1 figure and Álex Bergantiños delayed his position on the pitch. Depor lost the impulse with the changes and the game entered into the pause wanted by the locals, and they even found the undeserved reward of a third goal at the last minute.

Álvaro García made the play on the left, he released a cross that substitute Federico Piovaccariheaded on target, the ball hit the near post of Dani Giménez before the passive attitude of David Simón, who didn’t react in time to avoid José Pozo from collecting the loose ball and score from close range.

AFTER THE GAME
Terrible first half by Deportivo, the Galicians didn’t even reach 50% of pass accuracy and Rayo turned around the initial goal of Aketxe. In the second half Depor improved, but the changes of Anquela erased the visiting impulse and even allowed a third goal in a new defensive distraction.

Depor have now lost two of the three games played so far and the criticism is strong towards . The market closes its door on Monday and the next game is the visit of Albacete Balompié to the Riazor (Saturday, 16h00 CET).
