REVIEW: SPORTING 1 – DEPORTIVO 1 (LIGA)

16 Sep 2019
A penalty in the added time gave a deserved point to Deportivo, but the Galicians lacked ideas and could have lost against a poor rival.

BEFORE THE GAME
Coach Juan Antonio Anquela made changes at all the lines and even switched the draw into a 4-3-3. Christian Santos was a starter for the first time on the season and Gaku Shibasaki returned into the starting formation.

Dani Giménez was the goalkeeper, Eneko Bóveda was back at the right side of the defence, Vassilios Lampropoulos and Javi Moreno covered the central positions, the left side was for Salva Ruiz. The trio at midfield was composed by Álex Bergantiños, Vicente Gómez and Gaku Shibasaki. Víctor Mollejo attacked from the right wing, Ager Aketxe did it from the left and Christian Santos was the centre forward.

At Sporting Gijón, coach José Alberto López also decided to play with a 4-3-3. He opted in playing with two strikers as Álvaro Vázquez and Uroš Đurđević were starters. Carlos Carmona was the other reference in attack. Ex-Depor Borja López was a starter at the centre of the defence.

FIRST HALF
Decent first half for Deportivo, but with the disadvantage in the scoresheet. The locals scored a great goal at the start and later were dominated by a Depor that wasted two clear chances, including one that hit the crossbar.

The game started with Sporting pushing and with a goal for them, Manu García assisted Uroš Đurđević in a counterattack action and the Serbian unleashed a great volley from the left corner of the area and into the top-corner of Dani Giménez.

Depor tried to put a high pressure, but Sporting were still feeling comfortable and were passing the ball to offensive positions. The Galicians weren’t bad placed on the pitch and were only missing to create a scoring chance.

And that chance came at minute 14, Mollejo stole the ball at the right wing, then he released a cross that Christian Santos headed with problems between two defenders and the ball ended hitting the crossbar. That action was followed by a chance for Gaku, the locals failed clearing the ball in a goal kick and the action ended with Vicente assisting the Japanese and he sent the ball over the crossbar (16’).

Then the game was more paused, both sides had problems to attack due to the rival’s pressure. At Depor, Víctor Mollejo was the most active player, though his crosses and passes weren’t ending in scoring chances.

Sporting were only dangerous in quick plays and counterattacks, in one of them a long throw from the defence left Đurđević alone against Dani Giménez and the keeper made the deflection, though the play was disallowed for offside (34’).

SECOND HALF
Deportivo played a bad second part, especially after the substitutions made by Anquela. But a Sporting that lacked ambition paid a high price as a late penalty gave a point to the Galicians.

The game continued to be equal at the start of the second part, Depor were having the ball, but lacked some depth. Sporting also had problems, but suddenly they found some depth. First Damián Pérez missed the target firing from long range (50’), one minute later Carmona repeated the attempt and this time Dani Giménez made the save.

Depor’s first chance in the half was a direct free-kick of Aketxe saved by local goalie Diego Mariño (55’). Then Anquela made the first substitution and Borja Galán replaced Vicente.

Đurđević was close to score the second goal at minute 58, Depor lost the ball at the edge of the area and the Serbian fired a strong shot, but this time Dani Giménez was well placed and he made the save (58’).

Like it happened in the first half. Depor were well-placed on the pitch, but there were no spark and no ideas to unleash an offensive sequence. Meanwhile, Sporting were finding the cracks at Depor’s defence due to missed passes, in one of them Đurđević was close to score again and Dani Giménez cleared the ball to corner-kick (65’).

Koné was the second substitution as he replaced Gaku, which was followed by Saša Jovanović claiming the spot of Bóveda. Depor lacked ideas and a lot of that had to do with the changes made by the coach.

But Sporting lacked ambition and coach José Alberto started to make defensive changes and his team was going to pay the price. First Mariño made a great save against Aketxe, it was a play full of errors with both sides exchanging the ball at the edge of the area and the strong shot of the midfielder was saved by the local goalie (82').

And in the added time Depor were rewarded with a penalty, Mollejo headed on target a cross from Aketxe, and the ball hit the arm of Borja López, the referee didn’t react and it was almost 40 seconds later that the VAR official called referee Pulido Santana, and he quickly whistled the penalty after re-watching the play in a monitor. And Aketxe didn’t miss from the spot.

AFTER THE GAME
Not a bad game by Depor, but more is expected from a “candidate” to promotion. The Galicians allowed an early goal and later were impotent against a grey rival. Depor had clear chances in the first half and later the team was worse in the second as the coach started to make changes, and if in the previous weekend the team lost the game due to a VAR decision, now it was the opposite and a late penalty meant a point.

Deportivo are now out of relegation, but still far from the first six places. It’s a bust weak as there is Segunda football in midweek. CD Numancia visit the Riazor on Wednesday (21h00 CET).
