REVIEW: SPORTING HUELVA 0 – DEPOR LADIES 1 (LIGA)

20 Oct 2019
New victory for a Deportivo that remain at the top of the standings, it was a hard battle resolved in the second half with a goal from Alba Merino.

BEFORE THE MATCH
Coach Manu Sánchez was having Érika Sâmia as the only player out injured. Captain Miriam Ríos wasn’t picked for the game as she was going out of an injury. The coach made changes at the starting eleven, which included the returns of Esther Sullastres to the goal and Athena del Castillo to the attacking line.

THE MATCH
Not the best game of Depor Ladies, but effective enough to mean a new victory. The rival was difficult and both sides had problems to display good football due the poor state of the pitch. Once again Athenea Del Castillo left glimpses of his class.

It was a stuck game since the start, Depor Ladies had some control of the actions with long ball possessions, but without depth. The first approximation was a drilled ball of Gaby that Peke didn’t find as local goalie Chelsea Ashurst arrived first (10’).

The first opportunity for the locals was a pass of Marie-Yasmine Alidou to Patricia Mascaró, the attacker released a low shot that was easy for keeper Esther Sullastres (18’). Six minutes later, the same keeper was saving an attempt of Yoko Tanaka in a direct free-kick.

Depor Ladies didn’t arrive until minute 30, it was a corner-kick in which the attempt of María Méndez was blocked by Chelsea. Despite the lack of arrivals, the visiting side was the one that had the better game, mainly when Athena del Castillo was attempting his long runs.

At minute 40, the Galician team protested a penalty after María Méndez fell inside the area in a corner-kick action, but the referee didn’t whistle anything. The next chance also arrived in a corner-kick, Tere Abelleira collected the ball at the edge of the area and his shot went wide (43’). The first half ended with a polemic play, this after Peke scored for Depor Ladies ending a short pass from Tere, but the goal was ruled out for an inexistent offside marked by the assistant (44’).

The second half started with a Sporting Huelva that was pushing in attack, at minute 51, a corner-kick for them ended with Mascaró heading the ball on target and Sullastres made the save. Depor Ladies responded with a double opportunity, in the first a great play of Athenea ended with a strong shot barely deflected by Chelsea, then Tere sent the ball out (54’).

And then the lonely goal in the match arrived, Depor Ladies stole the ball at midfield, Nuria Rábano ended drilling the ball from the left and Alba Merino was there to push the ball in. The game became intense and Sporting Huelva was close to equalize after a lateral free-kick of Irene Rodríguez was deflected by Sullastres (60’).

The locals lost the strength of the first minutes and Depor Ladies started to look more dangerous, at minute 72, a strong shot of Athenea was saved by Chelsea. In the resulting corner-kick there was a new disallowed goal to Depor Ladies for a foul over the keeper. The first substitution was the entry of Kika for Alba Merino, followed by Michelle Romero claiming the spot of Peke.

Sporting Huelva also suffered a disallowed goal for a doubtful offside, it came at minute 82 in a play in which the cross of Sara Navarro was headed in by Mascaró. The third change at Depor was the entry of Maya Yamamoto for Athenea. Finally, Laura Vázquez replaced Tere Abelleira.
