Back-to-back wins for Depor in the debut of Fernando Vázquez. It was a solid display in defence crowned by seizing the numeric advantage and the set-pieces.

Fernando Vázquez debuted using a system with five defenders. It was a 5-2-3 draw that left Vassilios Lampropoulos sat on the bench, and with Víctor Mollejo performing as a centre forward.

Dani Giménez covered the goal, Eneko Bóveda performed at the right side of the defence, the left flank was for Salva Ruiz. The three centre-backs were Javi, Montero, Mujaid Sadick and Michelle Somma. Álex Bergantiños and Peru Nolaskoain performed at midfield, then the trident in attack was composed by Ager Aketxe, Mollejo and Borja Valle.

At CD Numancia, coach Luis Carrión performed with a 4-3-3 system, with Curro Sánchez, Higinio Marin and Moha Sanhaji as the trident in attack. The pitch was hard due to the weather conditions, normal in Soria in this time of the year (the temperature was 2 degrees Celsius).

Acceptable performance for Depor in the first part, the Galicians had some problems at the start, but later they settled, cut the passing lines for the rival and started to create some approximations. CD Numancia suffered an expulsion at the end of the half.

The game was moved since the start, CD Numancia were putting a high pressure and their first chance was a corner-kick action in which up to three men had the chance to connect the ball, and in the end Mujaid blocked the final shot of Adri Castellano (3’). Two minutes later Depor had it’s first approximation, it was a counterattack in which Mollejo missed the ball before facing local goalie Dani Barrio.

Soon, CD Numancia took control of the actions as Depor were losing the ball pretty easily. At minute 11, Curro attempted a volley from the edge of the area that was blocked by Dani Giménez. The first chance for Depor in the game was a long-distance free-kick of Aketxe that Dani Barrio barely cleared (15’). That was the best chance to score in the first part.

Depor were already settled at the middle of the first half, CD Numancia were still having the ball, but the Galicians were cutting the passing lines and therefore they lacked depth, only when Depor were in offensive positions, the locals were finding some cracks, mainly on the side defended by Bóveda.

At minute 28, after a long ball possession that included a corner-kick, Javi Montero fired a volley from long-distance that went out. Two minutes later Borja Valle repeated the action and the ball went over the crossbar.

A polemic play occurred at minute 40, Mollejo was trying to connect the ball inside the area, he fouled Gus Ledes and later the local player kicked Depor’s attacker, and after a revision by VAR he was sent off, so CD Numancia were forced to play with ten men for 50 minutes.

Smart second part by Deportivo. Los Blanquiazules found the goal having patience and seizing the numeric advantage, then the locals bet on the throw-ins and corner-kicks, but the defence was solid enough to clinch the clean sheet.

Depor tried to seize the numeric advantage and started to push in attack since the kick-off; at minute 48, Aketxe collected a pass of Borja Valle inside the area and his low shot was deflected by Dani Barrio.

The visiting side was clearly superior and found the deserved goal. It was a corner-kick of Aketxe releasing the cross from the left, Bóveda headed the ball at the near post and Dani Barrio made a small deflection, and the ball went into the path of Somma, who just had to pull the ball in.

After the goal, Deportivo continued being the best team on the pitch, at minute 58, Montero found the ball at the edge of the area after a long play for the Galicians, and the centre-back connected badly the ball and went wide.

With the passage of the minutes, CD Numancia started to press. It lacked ideas and resources to create scoring chances, but it was earning throw-in and corner-kicks that were creating problems. The first chance for the locals in this half came at minute 66, a high cross from the left was headed by Osede and Dani Giménez made the save.

But Deportivo were still having chances, at minute 70, Aketxe fired a strong volley from outside the area and Dani Barrio cleared the ball. The first two substitutions at Depor were the entries of Luis Ruiz and Borja Galán for Bóveda, then Peru Nolaskoain wasted a good chance after collecting a cross from the left, but his shot went wide (78’).

Samuele Longo was the final substitution as he replaced Borja Valle. The final ten minutes witnessed a desperate CD Numancia that bet on the free-kicks and the throw-ins, but Depor’s defence was strong enough to avoid problems.

Back-to-back wins for Deportivo and the Galicians played a solid game in the debut of Fernando Vázquez. The line of five defenders worked and things were also favourable as the Galicians had one more man for 50 minutes.

Depor remain as the bottom team at the standings, but it’s only one point below Racing Santander and is only four points away from safety. The next league game is precisely against Racing Santander at the Riazor (January 16), but before Depor visit Unionistas de Salamanca playing for Copa del Rey (Sunday, 12h00 CET).
