THE SYSTEM FOR THE SEGUNDA B SEASON

15 Sep 2020
The RFEF released the system of competition at Segunda B for the season 2020/21. The calendar will be released on Tuesday. Depor will need to play 26 games to clinch the promotion to Segunda A.

On Monday, the Spanish Federation (RFEF) had a meeting with the Regional federations and finally decided the format for the season 2020/21 for Segunda B, Tercera and Liga Iberdrola. The following is an explanation of the whole process, including what will happen on next campaign.

THE FIRST ROUND AT SEGUNDA B
There are five groups at Segunda B, each group has been divided in two subgroups. Deportivo have been put in subgroup 1 of group 1 with other nine clubs. Each team will play twice (home and away) against the other nine teams in a two-round tournament and 18 matchdays (calendar to be released on Tuesday). The final positions of this round will determine what will happen next with each club.

THE SECOND ROUND
It must be remembered that, for the season 2021/22, Segunda B will be divided in two leagues, the new third tier will be called Primera RFEF, the fourth tier will be Segunda RFEF, then Tercera División will be the new fifth tier.

So, the final position in the first round will determine the goal for each team in the second round. The first three places will have the chance to fight for the promotion to Segunda A. The places 4, 5 & 6 will fight in order to stay in the new third tier (Primera RFEF), and the places 7, 8, 9 & 10 will fight to stay in the new fourth tier (Segunda RFEF).

SECOUND ROUND, PROMOTION
The first three places in each subgroup will join the three places from the other subgroup, these six teams won’t start from zero, because they will drag the number of points from the first round and will only play against the rivals from the other subgroup in a two-leg system, this means six more games. The best three places in each one of the five groups will pass to the final round, and the best fourth place will complete the group of 16 clubs with options of promotion. The teams eliminated will play at Primera RFEF on the season 2021/22.

SECOUND ROUND, INTERMEDIATE
The places 4, 5 & 6 in each subgroup will join the other three clubs in the same positions from the other subgroup, these six teams won’t start from zero, because they will drag the number of points from the first round and will only play against the rivals from the other subgroup in a two-leg system, this means six more games. The first two places will stay in the third tier (Primera RFEF), the other four teams will go down to the fourth tier (Segunda RFEF)

SECOUND ROUND, RELEGATION PLAYOFF
The places 7, 8, 9 & 10 in each subgroup will join the other four clubs in the same positions from the other subgroup, these eight teams won’t start from zero, because they will drag the number of points from the first round and will only play against the rivals from the other subgroup in a two-leg system, this means eight more games. The first three places in each group will have a “reward”, and it will be to only be demoted to the fourth tier (Segunda RFEF), while the other five teams will go down two divisions (Tercera). Also, to point out that the worst third place among the five groups will also go down to Tercera.

THIRD ROUND, PROMOTION
The promotion to Segunda will need an extra round. The best 16 clubs will fight for 4 places at the second tier. For this the RFEF will name a fixed place to dispute the whole playoff. There will be four subgroups here, the best team in terms of points will be ranked as the number 1 team and will have a spot in the first subgroup, the second-best team will be in the second subgroup and so on. The worst team in terms of points will have to play against the best team in the first subgroup and so on. It’s a one-leg series that will leave 8 finalists, these finalists will play another round using the same standard in order to decide the four promoted clubs to Segunda A. In the end these 4 clubs will have to dispute 26 games in the whole season.

SEASON 2021/22
The RFEF will have 40 clubs at Primera RFEF, these clubs will be divided in two groups of 20 teams. Then there will be 90 clubs at Segunda RFEF divided in five groups of 18 teams. And finally, Tercera will have 18 groups, the Galician group will have 17 clubs plus three open spots in case of having demotions of Galician clubs from Segunda B.
