Second defeat in the season for Depor Ladies. The gals paid the price after a poor first half, there was a reaction in the second part, but the team failed to score the goals.

Coach Manu Sánchez had the casualties for injury reasons of Helena Torres and Ainoa Campo. He made two changes at the starting lineup compared to the defeat with Athletic Club allowing the debut of Costa Rican goalkeeper Noé Bermúdez and British midfielder Kenni Thompson, who was performing at the left side of the defence.

It was the first game on the season for Real Sociedad, because they had to delay their opening match with Rayo Vallecano (the Madrilenian team started the pre-season late due to a delay in the COVID protocol) The main news was to see Nuria Rábano performing for them in her first game since leaving Depor Ladies.

Second defeat in the season for a Depor Ladies’ team that isn’t working. The gals had big problems in the first part and allowed two goals. There was a reaction in the second half, but the modifications cut the impulse of the team.

Depor Ladies were putting a lot of pressure since the kick-off, but Real Sociedad were dominating since the opening stages. The first chance to score was a low shot of Bárbara Latorre that was blocked by Bermúdez (1’). Depor Ladies replied with a header of Gaby that went out (4’).

One minute later, Bárbara Latorre had a new chance with a shot that was deflected by Depor’s goalie. And it wasn’t strange when the first goal arrived for the visiting team, Nuria Rábano released a corner-kick that was headed by Ana Tejada, who was alone inside the area against the doubts of the keeper.

The goal was a hard hit for the morale of the players, Depor Ladies were having big problems to step into the rival’s area as Real Sociedad were putting a high pressure. The first shot on target of Depor Ladies was a long-range attempt of Peke that was blocked by visiting goalie Mariasun Quiñones (20’).

The coach didn’t like the lagoons in defence and Noelia Villegas replaced midfielder Kenni Thompson after only 30 minutes. The problems continued as the outcome of the ball was blokced, but Depor Ladies had a big chance to tie the score. It was a direct free-kick of Stephannie Blanco that hit the crossbar (37’).

Two minutes later the same Stephannie Blanco had a new chance to score, this time heading a lateral free-kick of Peke, but her attempt went out. Depor seemed to be improving, but things only got worse after Real Sociedad scored the second goal. It was a perfect pass of Gemma Maitane that allowed Bárbara Latorre to define in the one-on-one with Noe Bermúdez.

Depor Ladies had a good start in the second half, the first chance for the locals was a cross of Villegas in a corner-kick that Athenea del Castillo headed and Quiñones made the save (51’).

Real Sociedad were no longer putting the high pressure and the locals had more room to combine. Depor Ladies were having the ball and had the big chance to reduce the distance in the scoresheet after Athenea was fouled inside the area, the referee whistled the penalty, but Peke wasted the occasion as Quiñones blocked her shot (62’).

Only twenty minutes were remaining and, despite the improvement, the opportunities weren’t arriving, so Manu Sánchez made a triple change with the entries of Michelle Romero, Lía and Kika for Iris, Lady Andrade and Gaby.

Depor Ladies became desperate and some lagoons in defence appeared, and Real Sociedad were close to score the third in a new one-on-one between Bárbara and Noe Bermúdez, this time the keeper made the save with the aid of the post (76’).

The true is that the changes were negative for the team, the exit of Iris eliminated the balance had at midfield during the second half, and the absence of Lady Andrade erased the presence on the wings. So, the team lost the impulse of the first minutes. The only chance had in the last frame of the game was a possible penalty over Lía that wasn’t whistled (83’).
