REVIEW: DEPORTIVO 2 – SALAMANCA 1 (LIGA)

19 Oct 2020
Dramatic victory to launch the season at Segunda B. Poor game in large stages, but Bóveda found the goal at the last second to bring a victory to Deportivo.

BEFORE THE GAME
Coach Fernando Vázquez chose to play with the expected 4-4-2 formation, but the novelty was that Miku was left on the bench. Instead, Nacho González was a starter and performed as a second striker.

Carlos Abad was the starting keeper, Eneko Bóveda covered the right side in defence, the left was for Salva Ruiz, the centra positions were for Mujaid Sadick and Borja Granero. Álex Bergantiños and Celso Borges were the centre midfielders, Jorge Lara attacked from the left wing, Keko Gontán did it from the right, then Claudio Beauvue played in front of Nacho.

At Salamanca CF UDS, coach Sergio Egea chose to play with a 5-3-2 figure. Ernest Ohemeng was joining Uxío Dapena in attack. The rest was the expected formation. Public were allowed at the stands of the Riazor for the first time in six months, though only 3,000 attendants watched the game.

FIRST HALF
Very poor first half to release the season, Depor showed the same problems of the pre-season and barely created anything against a rival that didn’t give too many problems, but that neither suffered as it was well-organized on the pitch.

Deportivo had the first chance to score, Keko released a cross from the right and Beauvue headed the ball out (3’). The Galicians were feeling comfortable and were playing in offensive positions, though the only danger that was created in the next minutes was a free-kick and a corner-kick.

With the passage of the minutes, Salamanca CF gained some meters and Depor were still having the ball, but now it spent more time in the boots of the side defenders, Bóveda and Salva Ruiz. The game entered into a stage in which nothing was happening.

And it was until minute 25 that Depor created an opportunity, Nacho González found the ball at the edge of the area and his strong shot was repealed by visiting goalie Javi Jiménez, Borges found the loose ball, but his shot went wide.

That was only an isolated play, because Deportivo weren’t hammering a rival that each minute was feeling better. Lara and Keko were looking dangerous when they combined, but those actions were scarce. In the meantime, Salamanca CF had their first opportunities.

Ernest Ohemeng made a good play on the left that was deflected by Borja Granero(32’), and in the resulting corner-kick, Télles sent the ball out. Depor looked better within the final fifteen minutes, but it didn’t create a chance to score.

SECOND HALF
The excitement came for the second part. Goals at the start and the end of the half for Depor, in the middle a combination of some good moments and the clueless periods witnessed in the pre-season and also in the first part.

The second half started with the first goal for Deportivo. After only 45 seconds, the locals released two crosses, the first from Koke wasn’t found by Claudio Beauvue, but the second at the left from Nacho González was met by the French attacker, who crossed the keeper with a downward header.

Deportivo were feeling more comfortable after the goal, a combination between Keko and Beauvue ended with a shot of Nacho González that went out (50’). Seven minutes later the same player sent out a corner of Keko.

At minute 61, Nacho appeared again, this time to collect a volley inside the area and his final shot went out. Things were looking under control, but suddenly, Salamanca CF started to push and found the equalizer. Substitute Jorge Mora was close to score in a direct free-kick saved by Abad (66’).

And the local keeper failed in the next play, in the resulting corner-kick, he punched the ball jumping at the box, the ball went into the path of Alfonso Candelas, who scored with a gently volley firing from the edge of the area.

The game returned into the same script of the first part: Depor was a crippled team and was unable to break the local defence. Vázquez made three changes with Gandoy, Borja Galán and Uche Agbo replacing Nacho González, Lara and Borges.

Galán was the best man among the substitutes, but his runs on the left weren’t enough to create a clear chance to score. The last substitutions were the entries of Osede and Miku for Keko and Salva Ruiz, duo that was tired.

Bóveda was moved into the left side, while Osede was performing on the right. It was then that Salamanca CF lost control of the game, because they were no longer putting pressure at midfield and just spent the time defending inside the area.

And that’s exactly the kind of rival that suits this Deportivo, though the Galicians had to wait until the extra time in order to score the winning goal. It was a gently short cross of Iago Gandoy that Bóveda headed at the penalty spot to cross Javi Jiménez. It was also a punishment for a rival that decided to give up and waste time in any possible way, actually Javi Jiménez spent two minutes on the ground previously to the goal, reason why the referee added the two minutes that allowed the final goal.

AFTER THE GAME
Deportivo grabbed the drama had in the last stretch of the Segunda season, and clinched the first win of the campaign with a very late goal. It was a grey presentation, but the expected one of a team out of shape. Nacho González, Keko Gontán and Lara were among the best players in the game.

Deportivo add the first three points in this short first round of the tournament, the next game is the visit to SD Compostela (Vero Voquete stadium, Sunday, 17h00 CET)
