REVIEW: UNIONISTAS 0 – DEPORTIVO 1 (LIGA)

02 Nov 2020
An early goal by Héctor Hernández was enough to clinch the victory. Depor were better and had more and better chances, but the result remained open until the end.

BEFORE THE GAME
Coach Fernando Vázquez decided to keep the 4-5-1 system, Borja Granero wasn’t totally fit to play and therefore Erik Osede made his first appearance as a starter. Valín and Héctor Hernández also made their debuts as starters, while Nacho González kept the spot at the starting eleven.

Carlos Abad was the starting keeper, Jorge Valín covered the right side in defence, the left flank was for Héctor Hernández, then the central positions were covered by Mujaid Sadick and Erik Osede. Nacho González was a starter and was playing in the middle of Álex Bergantiños and Celso Borges. Keko Gontán attacked from the right wing, José Lara did it from the left and Claudio Beauvue was the centre forward.

At Unionistas de Salamanca CF, coach Hernán Pérez decided to play with only one striker in a 4-2-3-1 formation. Carlos de La Nava was the centre forward with José Carmona and Josué Medina ‘Josue’ attacking by the wings.

FIRST HALF
Entertaining first part, Deportivo played a decent game, supported by an early goal, a good defence and the game of Keko. The rival gave some problems, but the Galicians knew how to face the different situations on the pitch.

The game had an explosive start by Deportivo, in less than a minute Nacho González has completed a shot that was deflected, and in the resulting corner-kick, the Galicians scored. Keko Gontán released a drilling pass into the edge of the area, and Héctor Hernández was there to collect the ball and release a rocket into the left-right corner off local goalie Serna.

Then Eriki Osede picked an Achilles injury, Uche Agbo replaced him and Álex Bergantiños was playing as a centre-back. Agbo had the next opportunity to score through a shot that missed the target (15’).

At the middle of the first part, Unionistas were already dominating the ball possession, but they had problems to break the defensive line. Their first shot on target was a low attempt of Álex Rey that was blocked by Carlos Abad (23’).

Despite the problems, Deportivo were looking more dangerous. At minute 25, a couple of crosses from both sides didn’t find a receiver, and the play started with a good combination on the left through Beauvue and Keko.

The visiting team improved in the following minutes, they were now blocking the passing lanes and were also having arrivals, though those chances didn’t end in shots on target. The first half ended with wo chances to score for Unionistas that were born in errors in the output of the ball.

The first chance for Los Charros was an error of Keko in the output of the ball that ended with a shot of Álex Rey that missed the far post (35’). Then, at minute 44, Mujaid failed and a pass was drilled into the box, Álex Rey was there and his gently shot was denied by Carlos Abad.

SECOND HALF
Deportivo were better than the rival in the final part, Unionistas had the ball, but later lacked strength against a solid defence that barely conceded anything. The Galicians had clear chances to score the second goal, but the 0-2 never arrived.

Unionistas tried to push since the start of the second part, their first arrival was a short cross that De La Nava headed wide (46’). But the first big opportunities was for Deportivo. At minute 54, a combinative play on the right wing ended with Valin entering the area and releasing a shot that was barely saved by Serna. Two minutes later, a direct free-kick of Keko was deflected by the local goalie.

The second substitution at Deportivo was the entry of Iago Gandoy for Nacho González. The game was stuck at this point, the locals were hurrying up the game, but later Los Charros were unable to complete a shot. Meanwhile, the Galicians didn’t show anything special, just the moves of Keko Gontán, who was too alone in attack. Still, it was the better team and only lacked better decisions in the offensive plays.

The best chance for Unionistas was a combination between substitutes Aythami and Javi Navas that ended in a cross that was cleared by Valin. The ex-Fabril completed a great game, been solid at the right side of the defence and later joining the attacks.

Depor had a good chance to score at minute 73, Héctor González released a high cross from the left and Beauvue headed the ball when he was alone at the box. This action was followed by a good play of Keko, who assisted Lara inside the area and his final shot was deflected by a defender and the ball went out close to the far post (78’).

The final minutes left a clear picture: Unionistas were desperate to tie the game and Depor looked more dangerous, but the 0-2 never arrived and therefore the game was exciting until the end. Keko and Beauvue were replaced by Borja Galán and Miku.

Borja Galán (84’) and Miku (87’) had the last chances to score for Deportivo, this in counterattacks facing a team that bad placed on the pitch, but both attempts ended with shots that missed the target.

AFTER THE GAME
Second victory on the season for Deportivo, the Galicians were superior against a willful rival, what happened is that they lacked precision to define the plays and, with the narrow advantage, the excitement was in until the end. The whole defence made a great game, Agbo and Borges showed things at midfield, but the best player was Keko Gontán, the most regular player throughout the meeting.

The draw of Zamora CF and the victories of Deportivo and Pontevedra CF allow these three teams to lead the standings in subgroup one. The next game is the visit of Coruxo FC to the Riazor (Sunday, 12h00 CET).
