Deportivo B - Season 2011/2012
The season of Fabril should be considered as a big failure; the youngsters of Deportivo suffered the relegation from Segunda B on the past season and the goal for the campaign was to return to the upper league or at least to play the playoff round, this no matter the big changes made at the squad during the summer. In the end Depor B ended sixth at the standings, not good enough to convince the general opinion.
Two of the main problems during the season were the injuries and the inconsistency of the team; coach Tito Ramallo had big problems to build up the squad for the games, this since he always had several casualties for the games, at least three players were out from each clash, and in some occasions up to eight players were on the sidelines.
Fabril had a solid start adding seven of the first nine points in dispute; the debut was a 3-1 win over SD Negreira at Abegondo, followed by a 1-1 draw visiting Alondras CF; the second victory on the season was the triumph hosting Villalonga CF (2-0).
But then Depor B suffered the first defeat on the season, a deserved 0-2 loss at CD As Pontes as Ramallo’s boys left a pale impression on the pitch; the team bounced back clinching a narrow 1-0 win at home facing Órdenes SD and with a great goal of Jose Manuel, though later the Galician youngsters suffered the second loss on the campaign visiting Rápido de Bouzas (0-1)
The result put Depor B at mid-table, but the team was going to react as it chained four straight matches adding points, and more important was that the results were achieved against teams that were at the top. The period started with a convincing 3-0 win over Bergantiños CF, then the team achieved the first win on the road: 2-1 at CD Estradense.
Disappointing was the next game as Fabril could only add a point hosting Racing de Ferrol. The team was winning 1-0 at half-time mark thanks to a goal of Juan Carlos, but a polemic decision of the referee allowed the final equalizer as the visitors scored the tie during the stoppage time thanks to a free-kick that shouldn’t have been whistled.
And then Fabril played its best game on the season; it was a 4-0 victory visiting Racing Club Villalbés, club that at the time was the leader in the group. But in the following game Deportivo B fell down again losing against CCD Cerceda (0-1). The result was followed by a disappointing 1-1 draw hosting Betanzos CF.
This last result pulled the team out of the promotion zone, and once again Fabril bounced back with two straight victories defeating Club Xuventú Sanxenxo (3-0) and UD Somozas (3-1). Then a new unexpected loss arrived: 0-1 visiting CD Dordena. It was an unfair result as the referee disallowed two goals to Fabril’s youngsters.
Then, for the first time on the season, Ramallo’s team chained three straight victories, starting with a 1-0 win over big rival Pontevedra CF, which was followed by a new narrow win over CD Lalin (1-0) and by the biggest victory on the season: 6-1 hosting Cultural Areas (6-1), with a brace of both, Vela and Luis.
Precisely this was the key moment to explain the dual behavior of the team during the season, because these three victories, with the team looking solid, was followed by a period of three straight losses, the only time in which Depor’s youngsters suffered three straight defeats.
In the last matchday of the first round Depor B lost visiting CD Ourense (1-3), side that was the leader and that ended the season as the only promoted Galician club to Segunda B. The team reached the mdi-point on the season living outside the promotion zone, then the team lost visiting SD Negreira (0-1) and hosting Alondras CF (1-2), this last one was the first home defeat on the liga campaign.
Fabril bounced back defeating Villalonga FC (1-2) only to lose a second home meeting facing relegation-troubled AS Pontes (1-2). At this point there were a lot of doubts about the promotion aspirations of the team and Ramallo was criticized by the inconsistency of the players, but it’s also true that the casualties were crippling his team, for the clash with AS Pontes he was missing six players.
The casualties continued hitting the team for the next weeks, but the team bounced back and clinched 8 of the next 12 points in dispute. First it clinched a 1-1 draw visiting Órdenes SD, which was followed by the 2-1 victory hosting Rápido de Bouzas. Then Fabril played a goalless game at Bergantiños CF and then it defeated CD Estradense (4-1).
At this point Deportivo B was fourth at the standings and it was facing a key period as the next three rivals were fighting for the same goal of the promotion, and Fabril failed in those three tests. Painful was the defeat visiting Racing Club Ferrol (0-1), and later the team couldn’t surpass Racing Club Villalbés (0-0) and CCD Cerceda (1-1).
It seemed that Depor was going to miss the train of promotion, but once again the team showed an unexpected reaction and clinched five straight victories, which was the best streak on the season. The rally started with an exciting 3-2 win visiting Betanzos CF and continued with the triumphs over Club Xuventú Sanxenxo (1-0), UD Somozas (1-0), CD Dorneda (2-0) and Pontevedra CF (1-0). This last was a great triumph that left the team at the third position.
Three matchdays were remaining in the schedule, and it seemed that Fabril was at the edge of fulfilling one of the goals for the season, but the team failed at the moment of truth, only adding one of the last nine points in dispute. Sadly the team was hit by the injuries as eight players missed the next game: 1-2 defeat hosting CD Lalin.
The rival was playing for its life and deserved the result, then the team suffered a new defeat visiting against another rival trying to clinch the permanence: 2-3 at Cultural Areas. This result killed the promotion aspirations of Fabril. The team arrived to the last matchday needing a miracle, but there was never a real chance to reach the goal as Depor could only achieve a 0-0 draw facing champion CD Ourense.
Deportivo B ended the season at the sixth position and without reaching the playoffs, a negative season that was confirmed by the fact that coach Tito Ramallo resigned immediately after 11 years in the job. No matter the excuses –injuries and the youth of the players- clearly this was a bad year for the B team of Deportivo.
