Profiles - Juan Carlos (2)

The campaign 2013/14 meant a solid year for the ex-Fabril playmaker; after a couple of seasons failing to get a spot at the first team, he finally got a chance and seized it. However his first matches were poor and the playmaker passed unnoticed. His big chance came for the home game against CD Alavés (December 07). He was a starter scoring a goal and had a solid performance, since that moment the best moment of Juan Carlos came, either playing as a playmaker or dragged into the right wing. He was the only player capable of scoring a goal and providing an assist in the same game (3-2 Vs. CD Hércules, matchday 28). But Fernando Vázquez pulled him off as a consequence of the 0-3 loss against SD Ponferradina (matchday 36) and only returned to play the last two games. It was unfair as the playmaker was living his best moment. When the season was ending he told to reporters that he was feeling more participant of this promotion than of the previous one achieved on the season 2011/12, ”For me it's a little different. That year I trained every day on here (with the first team), but did not play. I debuted in the last match and had played before in Copa. When you play you feel more participant, like been part of the group.”

Ahead of the season 2014/15 a lot of things changed. Fernando Vázquez was fired and new boss Víctor Fernández was not counting with Juan Carlos, who was now 23, but the playmaker wasn’t thinking of leaving, as he told to reporters at the end of July, ”I’m a player of Deportivo and my goal is to stay. There’s a new coach and my goal is to convince him, later he and the club will decide, but for now nobody has told me anything. I appreciate the interest of other teams, but I still have one more year in my contract and for now I must fix my situation on here. We are in July and things are starting to move, but don’t know anything else.” The club was expecting to renew his contract and sign a loan deal. There were offers coming from CD Lugo and Recreativo de Huelva and the player was close to leave on deadline day, but in the end he stayed. At this point Juan Carlos was facing an old challenge: to fight for a spot starting from zero. Now the competence was bigger as the squad was composed by 25 players and with reinforcements like Medunjanin and Fariña that were able to play on his position.
