Basque goalkeeper ELDUAYEN is an impressive figure, one of the tallest players ever to have played at Deportivo. He was signed by Deportivo at the age of thirty, and after it occupied the position of third goalkeeper at the club. Although he had quit a good professional career (playing at Atlético de Madrid), Elduayen hasn't really written history at Deportivo.
Born in San Sebastián, he was formed in the youth system of Real Sociedad, and in December, 1983 kept a clean sheet on his debut against Osasuna (1-0). At Real Sociedad he shared the dressing room with players like Bakero and Beguiristain, and also with Basque players who would play at Deportivo later one, like Uralde, Albístegui, Ribera, López-Rekarte and Mújica. Back then mythical Arkonado was the starting goalkeeper of the Basques (from 1975 until 1989), and so young Elduayen had to wait for his chances. These arrived when Arkonado suffered a serious injury during the first match of the season 1985/1986, and Elduayen was capable to play twenty-one matches that campaign.
His performances convinced the directors of Atlético de Madrid, and he become their starting goalkeeper for the 1986-1987 campaign. But later he lost his place to legendary goalkeeper Abel (he would be their first man between 1987 and 1995). In the three seasons after it he only reached playing eleven other Liga matches, and in 1990 signed at Real Burgos. He spent three years at them, impressed Spain with their ninth place in 1992, but one year later Burgos suffered relegation back to the Segunda División.
It was 1993 when Elduayen came to Deportivo as a bargain, signed a contract until 1998, and replaced third choice Josu. It had been a tough fight in the previous two years between Canales and Liaño for the goalkeeping position at the Galician club, and now Elduayen joined them. But his time in La Coruña would be one without many appearances. In fact, there was absolutely no chance of playing matches in the season 1993/1994, when Liaño won the Zamora trophy with not even Canales being able to take this place.
That's why his Liga debut only arrived in April 1995 (after almost two years), when he replaced injured Liaño during a 0-0 draw at Valladolid. Elduayen kept a clean sheet that match, he repeated this against Cruyff's Barcelona (1-0) and also did so during thirty-three minutes at Sevilla. Then it was his turn to sustain an injury... and Elduayen was replaced by Canales. The next campaign it was again between Canales and Liaño, with the latter winning the fight once more. Elduayen didn't play at all that campaign, and after three seasons at Deportivo only had reached a number of three Liga matches.
With the arrival of Jacques Songo'o and Peter Kouba in the summer of 1996, Elduayen was permitted to leave on a free transfer and decided to join Real Valladolid. At this club he became second choice, behind César Sánchez (who in 2000 would join Real Madrid). Elduayen played his final match in the Primera División on 21 June, 1997 at Betis Sevilla. In 2004 he lives in Oleiros, and recently sold a bar he owned. He now wants to become a coach.
