IAGO IGLESIAS is one of the latest prides of Depor's fans, he's a Galician and talented playmaker that debuted with Depor in the year 2005. He shined with Depor scoring a couple of fine goals, but he never found a place with Caparrós nor Lotina. For that reason he was transferred to Elche during the summer of 2007.
The arrival of Joaquín Caparrós to Deportivo in the year 2005 was the key in his rising career. The Sevillan coach noticed since the beginning the talent of this Galician player and the opportunity knocked at his door on October, 20th 2005. Osasuna was visiting Riazor in a liga confrontation and Caparrós decided to give him a chance when the squad was losing the game (0-1). It was a big responsibility because he replaced Valerón during the second half. Although that Depor wasn't capable of reaching the draw, Iago demonstrated to be a promising player.
Later he made a new step in his career: he was part of the starting line-up. It happened when Mallorca visited Riazor for the start of the second round in la liga. He played as pivote and although that it isn't his normal position, Iago showed one more time his good skills. The game ended in a disappointing 2-2 and with Valerón injured, a casualty that was opening a door to him.
With Valerón out for the rest of the 2005/06 campaign, Caparrós saw in Iago the perfect replacement for the Canarian playmaker. But the transition was hard. Before to his return to the first squad, Iago spent hard and longs physical sessions in the gym. At the end his effort was worthy and the Galician player returned to face Málaga at the Riazor.
Since then he was a regular starter and enjoyed of good presentations like the one against Villarreal or the home game against Racing, a match that was also important to him since it was his debut as scorer. The effort done had it's reward at the end of the season and Iago obtained a professional contract with the club.
In this way, he was the first and last player during Caparrós's making the transition between Fabril and Deportivo's first squad. But the talent of Iago has also been noticed outside of the club, the U-21 national coach, Iñaki Sánz, called him for a friendly game against Denmark on May 17th, 2006. Once again he demonstrated that his future was be brilliant.
But the season 2006/2007 was negative for him, the youngster was discarded by the same Caparrós and was near to be loaned to Tenerife. The fans reacted furiously and the deal was cancelled by Lendoiro, but although Iago continued in the first squad, he didn't enjoy of too many chances during the liga campaign, he just played 264 minutes in nine games.
The exit of Caparrós for the season 2007/2008 seemed like a new opportunity for Iago, but the new coach, Miguel Angel Lotina, also discarded him. For that reason, the Galician youngster was transferred to Elche (Segunda División). Elche will have to pay €200,000 if they achieve the promotion to Primera and €75,000 if they want to sign an additional two-year contract with the player. In this last case, Depor will have a €150,000 buyout option over Iago. In this way, one of the favourite sons of Riazor will have to search for a better future outside of Galicia.
