Midfielder JOSÉ MANUEL was signed in the summer of 1999 when he was 25 years old. He had spent most of his football career at Sporting de Gijón, besides a loan to Mallorca, and seemed ready for a return to the Primera División. Until then he had played 39 matches at the highest level.
Deportivo offered him this chance but his time at the Galician club proved to be irregular. During his first season he was loaned out to Compostela and during his second season to Numancia. After it he did get some opportunities from Irureta and in the matches he played, including 4 Liga matches in the season 2001/2002, the midfielder did well. Nevertheless, he faced competition of Lionel Scaloni and Víctor Sánchez at the right wing and because of it never got much minutes.
In 2002 was loaned out Hannover'96 together with Fernando and Jaime. But as Jaime became an important figure for the German club, both José Manuel and Fernando never settled down and returned to Spain during the season. José Manuel finished the season at Ejido and in the season 2003/2004 defended the colours of Elche. It proved to be a disappointing time for the midfielder who returned to Deportivo after having made a bad impression in the Segunda División. At the age of 30, his best moments seem to have passed.
