JUANMI'S career began with Real Madrid in the junior ranks and he was part of the first team squad which won the Copa del Rey in 1992-93 season.

However, his debut in Primera and most noteworthy successes came with his nine-year stay at Real Zaragoza (1993-2002) where he won a European Cup Winners Cup (1994-95) as well as a further two Copa del Rey titles (1993-94 and 2000-01).

His career climaxed in early 2000 when former Spain boss José Antonio Camacho called him to the national team in his only appearance in a friendly encounter against Poland.

His free transfer to Depor came after his contract ran out at Zaragoza, where he had not been first-choice for some time. After having played 222 Liga matches at the club, he was signed by Deportivo as a backup for Molina when Nuno left for FC Porto.

Juanmi's opportunity to shine came when first-choice Molina announced his retirement for chemotherapy. He was shaky at first, as he had not been first choice at Zaragoza for some time, so quickly there were rumours of Depor buying a new goalkeeper. But Juanmi gradually improved and played 27 Liga matches that campaign, until Molina returned to the squad after the latter's successful recovery from cancer.

He got a relatively good deal in his one-year stint at Depor, the experience of playing against top teams like Bayern Munich in the Champions League. He signed for Murcia to be close to home.
