Deportivo B talent MAIKEL was one of those players close to a breakthrough at the club but in the end failed to do so. During the nineties several youngsters were given opportunities and Maikel debuted in the season 1995/1996 like David Fernández and Viqueira did. But like them he ended up searching for his luck elsewhere.

It was 26 May, 1996 when strong and tall Maikel had the honour of replacing Bebeto during the Brazilian’s final match at the club against Barcelona (2-2). Bebeto said goodbye in his own style, by scoring two goals, when he was given a standing ovation and Maikel debuted for Deportivo. That season he had produced eleven goals for Deportivo B and this was his reward given by coach John Toshack.

But the rivalry for attacking positions at the Galician club was incredible during the mid-nineties. During Maikel’s debut season there were Bebeto, Beguiristain, David, Manjarín and Radchenko while during his second season Renaldo en Madar were signed while another talent, Deus, debuted. Still Maikel played six Liga matches and even started the match at the Bernabéu stadium against Real Madrid (a 3-2 loss). Although he didn’t score a goal in the Liga that season, he did so in the Copa del Rey when some days before the Madrid match he scored during the 2-2 draw with Espanyol in Riazor. For Deportivo B he scored fifteen goals that season.

The season 1997/1998 was supposed to become his breakthrough, although the club added Bassir and Luizăo to their squad while they also signed Abreu and ‘Manteca’ Martínez mid-season. Until the Uruguayan strikers came he was given serious options in the months of November and December but had to cope with a team struggling. Not one of those matches were won and again Maikel didn’t score. And after the signings of the new strikers only a serious injury crisis made him playing three more matches. In one of those, on 22 February, 1998 against Athlétic de Bilbao, he formed a duo with David Fernández and scored his first Liga goal.

But that was it for Maikel at Deportivo. In the summer of 1998 he was twenty-two years of age and seemed ready to make the final step. ‘Manteca’ Martínez was released by the club and Abreu started his long serie of loan outs. But they were replaced by new signings ‘Turu’ Flores and Pauleta while Irureta preferred to use one striker per match.

A solution had to be found to give Maikel playing minutes and he was loaned out to Toledo from the Segunda División. There he did pretty well but in the meantime Deportivo had bought Roy Makaay. Maikel hadn’t played football at the highest level for one season while his contract was ending in 2000. Combined with the presence of Bassir, ‘Turu’ Flores and Pauleta, Deportivo decided to sell him to Xérez.

The plans of Xérez were to loan him to Eibar. But they didn’t consider him fit and so he played the season 1999/2000 at Xérez. He also did so during the season 2001/2002 and in between was loaned out to Getafe. In January 2002 he moved again as he was sold to Galician club Compostela. His sixth club of his career he found in the summer of 2003 when he started playing for Catalan club Terrassa.
