During the summer of 1995 the arrival of new coach John Toshack at Deportivo coincided with the one of Yugoslavian player BRANKO MILOVANOVIC. Only twenty-two years of age back then he was considered a big talent in his country as an attacking midfielder. But things turned out differently in Spain as he hardly played matches and one year later started his unsuccessful football journey throughout Europe.
Milovanovic made a disastrous Liga debut on 10 September, 1995 when Deportivo were crushed 4-0 at Compostela. Despite the men of Toshack were considered favourites to win the title that season they were four goals down after fifty minutes and Milovanovic replaced his compatriot Djukic with twelve minutes remaining. It was an indication of the difficult season Deportivo would be playing and the same counted for Milovanovic.
In the year 1995 he only played a total of about seventy-five minutes as a substitute although this slightly improved in 1996. He even started four matches in March and April in which the team stayed unbeaten. But these included just one full match and overall the season 1995/1996 became a very disappointing one for the player.
1996 saw a transformation of the team as players like Rivaldo and Martins arrived making life even more difficult for Milovanovic. In fact, the former youth international of Yugoslavia threatened with leaving the club if he wasn’t given opportunities to play. “I can help the team and I have talked with Toshack several times. But he always says I am quite young and I must wait for my chance. But I have two offers of important clubs. And if this situation doesn’t change I’ll leave the club at 30 June”.
As things didn’t change his expected departure already took place that same year. He was sold to Vitoria Guimarăes and from there he went in 1998 to Greece to play at AEK Athens. One year later he switched clubs again as he went to Ethnikos Asteras before returning home and signing at Milicionar Belgrade. Aged twenty-eight he was given another opportunity to play in Western-Europe when he was signed by Charleroi. He spent two years in Belgium and currently plays for Vojvodina Novi Sad.
