MUNITIS is a very fast and agile winger who signed at Deportivo from Real Madrid in the summer of 2003. But one year later, his time proved to be disappointing and the door is open to another challenge.
Munitis started his career in 1994 at Racing de Santander and played one season at Badajoz (1997/1998) before joining Real Madrid in 2000. This was after he played some impressive matches during the Euro 2000 tournament. He scored a goal in the amazing match Spain won 4-3 against Yugoslavia and created numerous problems for the opponent in the Semi-Final against France.
Deportivo were also after him at that time, but finally clinched him three years later. Munitis was on loan at Racing de Santander in the season 2002/2003 after Real Madrid didn't want to use him anymore. It made him play a total of 166 Liga matches before he went to Deportivo.
With his strength and pace Munitis can break open defences, something which Depor sometimes lacks. Munitis declared at his signing that "I have come to a team full of champions and which has won several prizes the past seasons. Besides, they have been fighting for every trophy recently and are of world level. I will give everything I have and don't want to disappoint anyone here. Deportivo president Lendoiro has helped me a lot and I want to thank him back. If I must I want to die on the pitch for the team".
But Munitis didn't play much in the season 2003/2004 because Irureta preferred Fran and Luque at the left and Víctor Sánchez at the right. Nevertheless, Munitis kept quiet and by working hard he wanted to prove he can still bring what he showed four years ago. He participated in 21 Liga matches and scored 2 goals. But most of these appearances were as a substitute, and by mid-2004 both parties were looking for ways to end the alliance.
All this changed in the late summer of 2004. Munitis impressed during the pre-season and gave the pass out of which Pandiani scored the equalizer at Espanyol during the first game in la liga. He ended playing 36 of the 38 liga matches and was one of the best players in a season that was disappointing for everybody. He repeated his good performance during the 2005/2006 campaign, specially during the beginning.
Munitis was the leader in the Intertoto series against Newcastle United and one of the main figures during the start of the liga campaign, his goal against Barcelona at Riazor will be always remembered by the fans. Unfortunately, he didn't maintain his performance for the rest of the season, at the end Deportivo was in mid-table, but the warrior spirit of the Cantabrian winger was always on the pitch.
For the campaign 2006/2007 everything changed, the necessity of a goalkeeper was more powerful than Munitis' continuity in the club. President Lendoiro negotiated his exit and Munitis ended in Racing Santander in a exchange for Dudu Aouate. A sad good-bye to one of the best warriors that Riazor has saw during the last years.
