Right defender Laure had such a storming impact at Deportivo B during the season 2007/2008 that Lotina counted on him to replace injured Manuel Pablo against Villarreal in January 2008. 22-year old Laure made a good impression and signed a professional contract at the club running until 2011. Now he’ll have to fight out with Barragán who’s going to be the successor of Manuel Pablo.
Madrid-born Laure arrived in La Coruña in July 2007 and became the first new arrival at Deportivo B. He had been captain of Real Madrid C when he was signed by Leganés from Segunda B. When his contract at this club ran out in June, there was no fee involved when he went to Deportivo B from the same league. Quickly he became one of the pillars of the team next to Fabricio and Álex. He explained it like this: “Usually it’s very tough in Segunda B to have a place in the starting eleven, especially if you’re a new signing. But at Deportivo B it was easy for me because there’s such a good vibe in the dressing room. My team mates have made the situation very easy. I feel comfortable playing offensively, also because last year I had even more responsibilities there and had more space. Now my target is to defend, although depending on our rivals”. Assistant-coach Juan Riveiro of Deportivo B called him “incredible” and “the best signing of the season”. He added: “He has an incredible sacrifice and you need to do the impossible to surpass him. It's a little exaggerated, but when he sends a cross, before the strikers gets the ball he has already returned to the back. He has found his place in the team really quickly”.
Things went really quickly then. Deeply-troubled Deportivo needed a right defender to replace injured Manuel Pablo against Villarreal, and Lotina picked Laure. He already announced the day before that Laure was going to start, and so he did. The defender connected really well with Guardado at the right, even though the Mexican was new to this position. Especially in the first half both were very active, and striker Adrián should have scored when he failed to connect to a cross delivered by Laure. Near the end of the match it was Guardado who scored Deportivo’s third goal after a pass by Laure. All-in-all it was a good debut of the defender, but playing good didn’t count much those days at Deportivo. Another match was lost despite having taken the lead twice and having been the dominant team for at least sixty minutes.
But despite the result, Laure was excited about his debut. “I’m living on a cloud right now”, he said. A dream has come true because to play in Primera is the dream of every player. My friends and team mates from Deportivo B have been calling me during the whole week! I was little nervous before the match and had some troubles getting sleep, but at the pitch I was just excited because I had been waiting for this for years”. Asked about the players who have his attention, he named Coloccini, Manuel Pablo, Sergio, Riki and Guardado. He also revealed how his colleagues had treated him. “Coloccini said that I just had to work as in the B-team, and Sergio advised me to start with easy passes to gain confidence. After the match everyone was disappointed with the result, of course, but they congratulated me with my debut and assistant-coach Ribera told me that they were satisfied with my work”. Asked for his favourite opponent, he said: “Ronaldinho, I would love to stop him!”
Laure didn’t play again that season but it wasn’t because of negative reasons. Manuel Pablo returned and played an impressive campaign, and Barragán also was back. But Laure did make it into the squad again for several matches. It were the days of the youngsters with Fabricio, Chapi, Adrián López, Laure and Xisco all getting opportunities. But as Chapi was allowed to leave, Adrián López and Laure were given professional contracts (and midfielder Álex too). Laure signed a contract until 2011 and Lotina, who asked for that, quickly revealed that Laure was going nowhere next season and would stay at Deportivo despite interest of many clubs from Segunda A.
