Makaay breaks goal drought as Bayern beat Bremen
(Adds quotes)
By Kevin Fylan
FRANKFURT, Nov 5 (Reuters) - Bayern Munich surged five points clear at the top of the Bundesliga with a 3-1 victory at home to closest rivals Werder Bremen on Saturday, helped by Roy Makaay's first goal since August 27.
Bremen took the lead inside a minute with a Miroslav Klose header but Bastian Schweinsteiger equalised soon afterwards and Claudio Pizarro put the champions ahead in the 34th minute.
Dutch international Makaay got the third just before the break, stroking in a Pizarro cross to end his long drought.
Bayern's victory gave them 31 points from 12 games, with Bremen staying second on 26.
Hamburg SV, in third place with 24 points, could trim Bayern's lead by a point if they win at Borussia Moenchengladbach on Sunday.
Schalke 04, runners-up to Bayern last season, won 3-0 at home to Duisburg to keep hold of fourth place with 21 points.
FRANTIC HALF
Bremen's early goal set the tone for a frantic first 45 minutes in Munich.
Tim Borowski got past Willy Sagnol down the left and, before Bayern knew what had hit them, Klose outjumped Schweinsteiger to become the first player to score against Bayern in a league match at their new Allianz Arena stadium.
However, Pizarro fired against a post within 60 seconds and the home side were level by the third minute when Schweinsteiger collected the ball 25 metres out and struck a shot that deflected off Torsten Frings and flew past Andreas Reinke.
"We were lucky we equalised so quickly," said Bayern coach Felix Magath.
Borowski struck the bar with a vicious shot for Bremen in the 16th minute and the chances kept coming for both sides.
Sebastian Deisler fired over from a good position for Bayern and moments later Oliver Kahn had to be alert to deflect a Frings cross out of the path of Nelson Valdez.
Bayern's second goal stemmed from a beautifully weighted pass from Schweinsteiger on the left. Ze Roberto was just quick enough to reach it ahead of Patrick Owomoyela and the Brazilian pulled the ball back for Pizarro to convert.
Pizarro turned provider for the third, racing clear of his marker on the right and crossing for Makaay, who stumbled slightly but still managed to connect well enough to send the ball flying past Reinke.
Makaay, dropped by Marco van Basten from the latest Dutch squad, celebrated with evident relief.
The second half offered less excitement as Bayern sat deeper and gave Bremen just a couple of chances from corners.
"It was a classic game, particularly in the first half," said Magath. "Like everyone in the stadium I was especially pleased with Roy's goal."

Phew!
I was starting to feel sorry for him...
That's good to hear. Now he can play more easily.

George Mitsou 06-11-2005 15:47

Werder Bremen is a quality side and I would choose their style over Bayern's anytime. However they face serious problems and have failed, for the moment, to provide adequate solutions. Most of all I would outline:

1. Young and inexperienced defensive line, not particularly competitive as a unit. They miss Ismael a lot, while Pasanen is injured and GK is not always reliable. Plus their coach adopts a rather open formation, with one DMC (usually Bauman). As a norm, they will score a lot (their attacking duo is the most productive in Europe so far, I think) but also concede, which is obvious in their statistics. While their ability to create dangerous situations up front is outstanding, sometimes they don't seem that solid / balanced. I think it was Frings who has recently criticised publicly this feature?

2. Lack of depth at the bench. Missing reliable alternatives, it becomes complicated in occasions when the schedule is tight, playing 3 matches per week. The starting lineup will not change so it is usual for them to face fatigue after 60-70 minute. This situation was more than obvious recently, when they lost in Athens against Panathinaikos. They should have turned the match but since they missed several clear opportunities, they suffered in the last quarter of the game...

NEURURER WON'T BE THE NEW COACH OF NÜRNBERG

Peter Neururer has dropped out of the running to be the new Nurnberg coach.

Nurnberg are looking for a successor to Wolfgang Wolf, who was fired last week, but after holding initial talks with the duo, Nurnberg’s managing director Martin Bader had to reveal that the club have been forced to look elsewhere.

With Nurnberg’s fans protesting against the signing of Matthaus — a legend of Nurnberg's arch-rivals Bayern Munich — Bader admitted that the former German international will stay in charge of Hungary.

“At the end of the day the criticism was too much and in a desperate situation like ours, we need to have the fans on our side,” stressed Bader.

Former Bochum boss Neururer has, meanwhile, also turned down the job after watching the club in action over the weekend.

Guided by interim boss Dieter Lieberwirth a helpless Nurnberg suffered a 1-0 home defeat against Stuttgart and remain bottom of Die Bundesliga, already four points adrift of safety.

“Mr Neururer told us that he is no longer interested as he feels that he won’t be able to help us,” explained Bader.

Former Leverkusen and Hamburg coach Klaus Toppmoller and ex-Dortmund and Stuttgart boss Matthias Sammer are the names mentioned most frequently around the Frankenstadion, but it remains to be seen if they are ready to take the FCN hot seat.

aldo 09-11-2005 16:36

Nürnberg appoint Meyer

FC Nürnberg have appointed veteran coach Hans Meyer to replace Wolfgang Wolf.

The 63-year-old has agreed a contract at the Frankenstadion until the end of the season and will be officially presented on Wednesday.

Meyer, who led Borussia Mönchengladbach back into the top flight in 2001, has been trusted with the job of guiding the rock-bottom Bavarian outfit out of relegation trouble after a terrible start to the season.

FCN sport director Martin Bader has turned to Meyer after talks with both Lothar Matthaus and Peter Neururer broke down over the past week.

Bader was part of the Hertha Berlin management team when Meyer saved the capital city club from a similar predicament in the spring of 2004.

Hannover sack Lienen

Hannover have sacked coach Ewald Lienen following a series of disappointing results.

The Bundesliga outfit confirmed the news on Wednesday after a crisis meeting between club bosses and Lienen on Tuesday evening.

A statement released by the club said that Hannover now expected "new impulses for the sporting future of the team through a different coach" and thanked Lienen and his assistant Michael Frontzeck for their work.

Lienen joined Hannover in March 2004, but a disappointing start the season, despite substantial summer investment in the transfer market, finally led to the 51-year-old's dismissal.

The Reds are currently 13th in the Bundesliga table with just two wins from their first 12 games.

aldo 09-11-2005 20:36

HANNOVER SIGN NEURURER

Hannover 96 have appointed Peter Neururer as their new coach. He promoted to the Bundesliga in 2002 with his former club VfL Bochum, only 2 years later he earned a spot in the UEFA-Cup with them. But Bochum relegated in 2004/05 and Neururer resigned.
After being away from football for over 3 months he now returns to the Bundesliga. "3 1/2 months without football are enough. I already got onto my family's nerves. Only motorcycling and playing golf doesn't fill the day, football is my life", he sais.
The 96ers only occupy the 13th spot this season, although they spent a lot of money on new players like German international Thomas Brdaric before the season. That was the reason for them to sack Ewald Lienen, who had achieved a remarkable 10th spot with a rather poor squad last season.
After Wolf and Lienen being sacked and Meyer being appointed as new manager the signing of Neururer is already the 4th big headline here in Germany this week.

Ballack offer withdrawn

The likelihood of Michael Ballack staying with Bayern Munich has receded after the Bavarian giants withdrew their contract offer for the midfielder.

The gifted Germany international playmaker is out of contract with the Allianz Arena outfit next summer and Bayern were keen to retain his services, despite setting a deadline for a decision on his future.

At the club's AGM, chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge confirmed the club have opted to take their offer off the table.

"We officially withdrew our offer today," confirmed Rummenigge.

The news is likely to alert Spanish giants Real Madrid and Premiership outfit Manchester United, although Bayern have not given up hope of retaining Ballack.

"It does not necessarily mean that Michael will leave us but I say, point blank, that we will immediately sound out the market to look for a replacement," he added.

aldo 15-11-2005 20:01

Magath hopeful over Ballack

Bayern Munich coach Felix Magath remains confident Michael Ballack with stay at the club.

Ballack's future at Bayern has been the subject of intense speculation in recent months, with the player's current deal due to expire at the end of the season.

Speculation intensified that Ballack would leave the German champions on Monday when Bayern withdrew their contract offer to the midfielder.

Ballack's agent has admitted a number of foreign sides have expressed an interest in the goalscoring midfielder, who can open talks with interested suitors in January.

Manchester United, Real Madrid, Milan and Internazionale are all thought to be keen on Ballack, but Magath is hopeful that the German international will remain at Bayern.

"I believe he's going to stay with us anyway," Magath said.

Bayern's sporting director Uli Hoeness also believes Ballack could well stay at the club.

"For me, the final word hasn't been spoken yet," Hoeness told German radio.

"I can well imagine Michael will stay with Bayern. But one thing is clear. From now on, the talks will be led by us and not him."

secret 16-11-2005 21:30

Now, Inter want Ballack too! He will give him 60 Million Euro for 5 years! They are crazy! Inter have 365 Million Dollars owe!

aldo 17-11-2005 14:03

But their president, Massimo Moratti, is a billionaire.

I don't beleive he'll go to Dortmund, Aílton onlly wants to earn money which isn't possible anymore in Dortmund. Cologne will maybe sell Podolski to Bayern in the winter transfer period so they'll have the money to pay him.

I forgot to mention the farewell match to one of Borussia Dortmund's legends last week... Julio Cesar

Borussia's CL winner team from 1997 (Stefan Klos, Teddy de Beer, Jürgen Kohler, Jörg Heinrich, Stefan Reuter, Matthias Sammer, Steffen Freund, Günter Kutowski, Paul Lambert, Andreas Möller, Knut Reinhardt, Lars Ricken, Karl-Heins Riedle, Paulo Sousa, Michael Zorc, Flemming Povlsen, Stephane Chapuisat and Heiko Herrlich)

played against

Julio's Friends that was composed of Dunga, Jorginho, Roger Milla, Aldair, Ailton, Elber, Del Piero, our former Depor player Bebeto etc.

It must have been quite an atmosphere with 40,000 people attending the match in the Westfalenstadion. The only disappointing thing was the action of greedy Diego Maradona who demanded 20 minutes before the take-off of his plane from Buenos Aires to Frankfurt another 200,000 Euro (!).

Obrigado e adeos Julio!

Hamburg player hit by drumstick from crowd
FRANKFURT, Dec 3 (Reuters) - Hamburg SV midfielder Alexander Laas was cut in the head after being hit by a drumstick thrown from the crowd in Saturday's 3-1 win over Cologne in the Bundesliga.
The drumstick was thrown from a section of the crowd occupied by Cologne fans while Hamburg were celebrating their second goal.
Laas, who was carried away for treatment by his captain Daniel van Buyten, was able to return to the pitch a few minutes later.

Brazilian Elber to leave Moenchengladbach - reports
FRANKFURT, Dec 3 (Reuters) - Former Brazilian international striker Giovane Elber is to leave Borussia Moenchengladbach, German media reported on Saturday.
According to the reports, Gladbach will announce the split after Saturday's Bundesliga match at home to Nuremberg.
Earlier this week, Elber was fined 10,000 euros ($11,700) and warned about his future conduct after criticising coach Horst Koeppel in a newspaper interview.
The 33-year-old Elber, formerly of Bayern Munich and VfB Stuttgart, is the highest scoring foreign player in the history of the Bundesliga with 133 goals.
He joined Gladbach from Olympique Lyon on a free transfer in January 2005 but was dogged by injury problems.
This term, he has made just four brief substitute appearances in the Bundesliga without scoring.

I think he's talented, he's scored 6 goals so far this season and is 21 years old. But IMO he needs to go to a bigger club next season because of his development.

what your team in germany !

for me i like levercosn ;) best team in germany last 5years made many talent and play very nise football ..but he dont have lucky  loss many cup in 2001 because bad lucky

and i dont like munch or dortmond ..yes he big club but i hate him because i suport small team :D last 2season i like wlfsorg ..and last season i like hertha berlen ..but this season i like hamborg ..i think this years he can play UCL ..with new talent like vart -atuba-
and very good DF bulhroz he from moroco but play for holland..
and moore very good player like mihdafeka from iran and berbaretz ..i call him whait rivaldo

BiGG SAM 05-12-2005 01:40

i dont know how bremn win in bunds liga 5or 4 or 6 but in UCL he loss 3 from barca and accept 3goals from udie ..and last years he loss 7=3from lyon and 3\0 !!!

thas mean bunds liga not big league or what !!

munch and levercosn to ..loss 3\1 and 1\3 from leverpool ..and munch loss 1\4  from chelsea and accept 2 in home !!

i like bundsliga and think have very good talent can be great in anuther league ..but i think he need moore famus player to have moore fans ..

if some germany team contract with player have big fan like rivaldo - batigoal before 2season or contract now with famus player not play with big club or be in binch all time like crespo - del piero - cassano - elc ..

i thnik big proplme in bundisliga he dont have big money to get famus player ..like what dortond do in 2001 he get roso for 22mil and aoroso for 28mil and koller for 12mil !

but i think munch be many last time he is tha champion because he stell star anyther team like what he do with ballack - lucio - kovac elc from leverkosn ..and frengs from dortmond and pizzaro from bremn and laham from stutgart elc

One of my best friends is German and supports FC Koln, so I follow them, Lukas Podoski is their big fish in small pond. I also follow d'Allessandro's progress st Wolfsburg.
