Spain | Primera División & Copa del Rey | 2010/2011

Well, I'm excited! Are you not?! I can't wait to get back stuck into the rollercoaster of emotions La Liga provides. Here is a list of the teams competing for the coveted La Liga prize

Barcelona
Real Madrid

Seriously, here is the list...

Real Madrid
Barcelona
Valencia
Sevilla FC

Deportivo La Coruña
Atlético Madrid

Villarreal
Athletic Bilbao
Getafe
Almeria
Espanyol
Mallorca
Osasuna
Real Sociedad
Real Zaragoza
Sporting Gijon
Racing Santander
Málaga
Hercules
Levante

I think we have a squad to challenge for the European spots, our depth is better this time around and with the signings we've made this year it will boost our "creativity stocks".

It will be interesting see how Mallorca cope with competing in 4 competitions this year, there depth will be tested.

Real Sociadad will thrive at being back in La Liga and will surprise many. Unfortunately, Malaga will not be as lucky this year as they will suffer relegation with Hercules and Levante. BUT, La Liga is interesting and will probably make me look like a fool with these predictions at years end.

So, they will finaly play in Europa League, right?

caabrego 15-07-2010 14:53

No, they still out. The UEFA website is only putting Atletico and Getafe as the only two Spanish teams in the competition.

Lebn8r 15-07-2010 23:39

Interesting, I'm sure I read somewhere that they had cleared their name. Either way, I don't think they'll do anything special this season.

I agree with this! I think we can atleast finish in a european spot this year. Lets just hope our most creative player filipe stays!

dejan84 18-07-2010 09:51

is it true that the clubs will revolt against barca and real, because they take 50% of tv rights.

the sevilla president suggested that barca and real leave the league and play their own.

i have to say i agree with him, every club in spain is getting cannabalized, so real and barca can buy ridiculously expensive players, and show the world, "how strong spain is" with its 20% unemployement and all LOL

Filip 18-07-2010 23:01

it's the first time im not excited for the new season to start. Barca will win once more, probably with a bigger gap this time over Real, and about 23-27 points over the 3th team.
depor is gonna struggle to survive from the first till the last game imo. I even think we're between the 3 most clear degradation candidates. Not being pessimistic, just realistic. We sold our only asset.

caabrego 19-07-2010 00:16

Confirmed: the draw for la liga will take place this Tuesday.

Paul 19-07-2010 01:21

So the 1st round is gonna be 28-29 August?

caabrego 19-07-2010 02:46

Yes

Glasgow Barcelona and Glasgow Real Madrid imo :(
but I hope Depor can do the same thing that Aberdeen did in the era of Sir Alex Ferguson :p

Excellent. Almost at the point where I can book trips for next season. That's what it's all about. :)

Real showed this even under Franco, and this whole dominancy of the big 2 has been the same for 70 years now...
And not only these 2 show strange things: the totally bankrupted Valencia, with some 500m EUR debts to pay, wants to buy Mesut Özil from the financially healthy and always probitable Werder Bremen... the reverse would be more normal...

It's not the same. The last 20 years, have been pretty competitive. It's the last 2 seasons, and of course the prospect of the future, that make things look like the Scotish league.

are you sure? in the last 25 years RMCF won 11, while FCB won 10 championships ;) all the other teams won 4 championships.
In 1990 RMCF won with 9 points, in 1991 Barca won with 10 points advantage at the period of 2 points for a win.
In 1996/97 RMCF had 92, Barca had 90 points, we were the
3rd with a solid performance of 77 points. In 2005 Barca had 84, Madrid had 80,3rd placed Villarreal had 65 points.

caabrego 19-07-2010 16:56

Can you believe this? The website of the Spanish federation published today the first matchday of la liga 2010/11, but the draw is tomorrow :D

After realising of the error, they erased the page

http://static2.eldepor.com/data/arti...jpg?1279548295

The first matchday in this "ghost" calendar was:
Barcelona - Valencia
Real Sociedad - Mallorca
Racing - Villarreal
Zaragoza - Athletic
Osasuna - Espanyol
Deportivo - Almería
At. de Madrid - Sporting
Getafe - Málaga
Sevilla - Hércules
Levante - Real Madrid

I didn't say they were not the most powerful teams in la liga, i said that la liga was quite competitive the last years, comparing to the situation that has risen 3-4 season back and seems to rule la liga in the present and in the future.

Since i've following la liga, in the early 90's, the case where those two are a liga on their own, and the rest are trying to get in the maximum the 3rd place, have been the case only in recent seasons.
Bring on 1mil of stats, i don't care :D

Shelvin 20-07-2010 06:56

i just hope we dont get all the big teams in a row...!

add juca to that who will spend the whole season being injured!

ggeorg 28-07-2010 10:51

Barca's officials admitted a loss of 77mil euros, for the previous season.

Well, they got a few weeks back a loan of around 150mil, i guess they will get another loan, no big deal, they're Barca after all...

Paul 30-07-2010 01:42

Looks like Cristiano will again be known as CR7. Clubs can't retire shirt numbers in Spain, can they?

caabrego 30-07-2010 01:44

Sure they can.

Paul 30-07-2010 01:45

Really? Didn't Sevilla have a problem when they tried to retire Antonio Puerta's number?

caabrego 30-07-2010 01:50

mmm... I remember it was possible

DepHun 03-08-2010 14:54

what about the latest match fixing scandal of Hercules Alicante? (El Pais today). they seems to have bought the match against Cordoba for 300,000 EUR, and/or the gk Raul Navas for 100,000 EUR.... Hercules won 4-0 that match

I just read about that. Apparently the club's majority shareholder was being investigated for something to do with some corruption in real estate and had his phone tapped.
He was then recorded bragging about how they paid Cordoba's keeper 300k to let them win.

Disgraceful if true.

DepHun 03-08-2010 17:15

yes, but won't they (Hercules) get a ban out of Primera for this? the Montenegroin int'l gk, Poleksic, playing in Hun, is banned out from football for 18 monthes by UEFA for not publishing a refused match-fixing probe...

deporik 03-08-2010 17:51

Who knows????

You'd think that if they have good proof like is suggested, then Hercules should be punished severely. However, accusations of corruption especially in promotion races, seems to be commonplace and it's almost like it's not investigated properly to avoid them actually having to do anything.

Shelvin 04-08-2010 02:50

They should be relegated if this true!

It's blind the leading the blind really. Both corrupt parties will probably agree (for a fee) to both keep quiet as making noise means paperWORK!

caabrego 04-08-2010 13:48

Well, for the moment la liga is blind or at least is trying to not look at this. But Betis is protesting, also Cadiz.

Riazor warriors 21-08-2010 20:24

Paul 22-08-2010 11:02

It's a shame. Last week I was thinking that Sevilla might be worth throwing some money their way for the title. Can really only see Barca or Real Madrid now.

vink 23-08-2010 17:11

Sevilla looks measurably weaker, as does Valencia. I can't believe I'm saying this, but I think Atletico Madrid has the best chance of challenging the top two. If their new defensive line meshes quickly, watch out. They bought really well this transfer season.

peterke2000 23-08-2010 17:13

i think we coud see a verry diffrent la liga then last year mallorca sold so many players to

I was thinking the exact same thing. Solid squad on paper. They might actually be worth throwing a few bob their way.

The DK Blanquiazul 28-08-2010 20:33

Expected a hell of a lot more from Malaga tonight. Disappointing.

caabrego 28-08-2010 21:57

And the Super Bilbao of Caparros was the first leader... ho boy! :D
