Default World Cup 2006 (Germany)

We discussed with the moderators the best way to follow the World Cup, and we decided that the easiest way is with one single thread. So please any comment, minute-by-minute coverage and post games impressions must go here. Please don't create new topics just to talk about one specific game or national team.

I remind you the groups:

Group A
Germany
Costa Rica
Poland
Ecuador

Group B
England
Paraguay
Trinidad and Tobago
Sweden

Group C
Argentina
Côte d'Ivoire
Serbia and Montenegro
Netherlands

Group D
Mexico
Iran
Angola
Portugal

Group E
Italy
Ghana
USA
Czech Republic

Group F
Brazil
Croatia
Australia
Japan

Group G
France
Switzerland
Korea Republic
Togo

Group H
Spain
Ukraine
Tunisia
Saudi Arabia

And the first five games:

Friday June 9th
Germany Vs Costa Rica (18h00)
Poland Vs Ecuador (21h00)

Saturday June 10th
England Vs Paraguay (15h00)
Trinidad and Tobago Vs Sweden (18h00)
Argentina Vs Côte d'Ivoire (21h00)

Just read this will normally be the last tournament of Serbia and Montenegro. There is a big chance the land will seperate into two (In Serbia and Montenegro of course ) No matter the result of the matter Serbia-Montenegro will be able to participate without problems in the World Cup. For the prerounds of the EC 2008 however, Serbia would remain in group A, while Montenegro would go to a group with only 6 (or was it 7) teams. Which would be very nice for the Belgians, as Serbia won't be as strong as Serbia-Montenegro However, most of the players will go to Serbia, while Montenegro will be a rather small team.

So Penguin, are you from Serbia or Montenegro

Everyone who I have spoken to have said that Brazil will be champions but I'm still to be convinced. Dida has been poor for Milan this year, R.Carlos has been defensively shocking and not very effective going forward, Cafu has been injured for months, Emerson for the last part of the season was struggling with injury, Ze Roberto isn't a central midfielder, Ronaldo has been below par and Adriano has suffered a huge loss of form. However Ronaldinho and Kaka have once again had great seasons and if they sparkle that might just be enough but if they rely too heavily on these two then they won't be lifting the trophy this year.

The Deportivos defender Capdevila is ready to replace the Asier del Horno, that probably will miss the WC, because of an injury.

We'll find out if Del Horno can play next week. The doctors are not optimistic, but Capdevila is ready!

''If the spanish coach Luis Aragones call me on moday, i'll go to the WC!'' said Capdevila

''My wish is that Del Horno gets fit. I would be a bad teammate if i was happy. I don't wanna go to the WC, because of an injuried teammate''.

The situation is not new for Capdevila, that replaced Salgado in the European Championships in.

I seen a warm-up match yesterday between T&T and Wales. With half an hour gone T&T were winning 1-0 but they brought the legend that is Marvin Andrews off and they ended up losing 2-1.............

Zambrotta has picked up a thigh injury and is a doubt for the world cup which would be a great shame as I see him as the best fullback in the world.

ACUNA: WE'LL TEST YOU
By Steve Rogers

PARAGUAY captain Roberto Acuna believes England can win the World Cup but not before a rough ride from the South Americans.

Acuna insists Sven Goran Eriksson's men have the potential to lift the trophy in Germany next month.

Although the Deportivo La Coruna midfielder says England will not have it all their own way when they play Paraguay in the Group B opener on June 10.

Acuna said: "We have a lot of respect for them. They can be the world champions. But they need to prove on the pitch that they are one of the candidates.

"We'll try to cause problems and make life as hard as possible for them."

Paraguay's preparation has seen coach Ruiz Anibal take his team on a Scandinavian tour to face Norway and Denmark because of their similarities to England.

After a 2-2 draw with Norway, Ruiz omitted seven of this first team regulars but still managed to get an impressive 1-1 draw in Denmark - a stark contrast to the full strength England team who were humiliated 4-1 in Copenhagen last August.

He still only looks about 12 years old. A real "baby faced assassin".

Germany we far from convincing in their warm up match against Japan.

I am hoping that Japan dont play like they did in the first half against the Socceroos!
