Lotina has to react, because of injuries of Filipe and Angulo!!! It's obvious that we don't have left-back in our squad, so the most logical thing is - changing formation!!!

IMO, probably the best solution is to play with 3 central defenders, and to use Guardado as left wing-back, that will give more stability to our defence, and the same power up-front!!! We played like that some time ago, why it shouldn't work now? Or, scenario I don't like, to start experimenting with some other players at LB position?!?

Basically, there are 2 variants:

1st, if we should win, or if we want to play offensive - some kind of 5-3-2, IMO:

------------------------ Dani -----------------------
------------- Ze Castro - Lopo - Colotto ------------
MP ---------------------------------------- Guardado
-------------- Juca - Sergio (A. Tomas) -------------
-------------- JCV (JR/JD/Shark/Lassad) -------------
------------------Riki -------Adrian (Bodipo, Mista)---

or, simple:

GK: Dani
3xDC: Ze Castro, Lopo, Colotto (alternatives - Piscu, Rochela)
WBL: Guardado
WBR: MP (alternative - Laure)
2xMC: Juca, Sergio (alternatives - A. Tomas, Juan Dominguez, JR)
AMC: JCV (JR, I. Perez, JD, Lassad)
2xFC: Riki, Adrian (Bodipo, Mista, Lassad)

2nd, as an alternative, 5-4-1, deffensive, something like:

------------------------- Dani ---------------------
-------------- Ze Castro - Lopo - Colotto -----------
MP --------------------------------------- Guardado
Shark ------ Juca ------ Sergio (A. Tomas) ------- JR
----------------- Riki (Adrian, Bodipo) ---------------

IMO:

GK: Dani
3xDC: Ze Castro, Lopo, Colotto (alternatives - Piscu, Rochela)
WBL: Guardado
WBR: MP (alternative - Laure)
2xDMC: Juca, A. Tomas
(A)MR: Shark (JR)
(A)ML: JR (I. Perez)
FC: Riki (our other awesome strikers)

Agree with Rik. Seoane is in poll position now. I think Lotina will persist with Laure and MP in the majority of matches and when one or other needs a rest, or has a dip in form, he'll play Seoane at LB and either MP or Laure at RB. I expect him to come in for the games against Xerez and Tenerife.

From what I've seen of Rochela, he would not make it as a full back - it's just not his game. And aalso agree with George that there's no sense now in experimenting with 4 or 5 players in that position during La Liga. Seoane has the confidence now that he can do it (at least in the short term). Let's stick with him and build up his confidence even more. Also, if he played that well out of position against Sevilla, I can't wait to see him play at RB.

I understand what you're saying Vlada, but for me, changing the formation is not an option, especially as it's difficult enough for the Fabril players adjusting to Primera in the first place. Over-complicating things will certainly lose us more points.

I would also like to see Raul & Christian (left backs from Fabril) given a chance.
They are both left footed, which gives them an advantage over M.Pablo and Seonne in that position.

I am not sure, maybe as we might go down, those matches become friendlies for championship points...

To Rik about Seoane: do you think that Sevilla played with full power against us that match? I am not sure once again.

With the exception of Javi Varas in goal. they played with pretty much the full power that they had available. It was certainly a team better than half the teams in La Liga can put out each week.
Sure, they didn't have their best day because we beat them with our team of reserves but as I asked earlier, what exactly did Seoane do wrong? I thought he coped well against their wingers and was one of only 6 players to get votes in the Pena Man of the Match.

Of course, I'm not saying he's a ready made replacement for Filipe but then again, there's few people in the world that could be (if any). What I am saying though, is that when he was put in to do a job, he did it fine and if it ain't broke then why try and fix it? Surely we try things and if they work OK, we should stick to them and only fix them if they don't work.

OK, so I meant Sevilla did not play with full motivation, as far as I remember. But I am with you, why not Seoane, let's try to build-in some youngster finally.

Vlada, nice one!

Indeed, we played with offensive side defenders in the second part of the 07/08 season and it worked out pretty well. I'm not saying that was the solution to our problems then though.

But a line-up like this fields most of our best players:

Dani
Zé Castro - Lopo - Colotto
Manuel Pablo - Guardado
Pablo Alvarez - Juca - Sergio/Tomas - JR (playing inside)
Riki or Adrian

Yes, Leon, that's the point!!! Coach has to react and change tactic & formation depending on available players... And, unfortunately, Lotina doesn't have so many options...

so for the second half we might have a non contract-renewd coach, 5-6 key-players in the team, who are going out in the summer, and Filipe Luis outside-injured. Lassad is out as well, at least until early March. we have no left back, and cf. nice challange to show something positive.
it seems in the summer somebody has to build a new Deportivo. that would be another nice challange as well.

I think that this is our league:

4 Mallorca 37 | CHAMPIONS LEAGUE
---------------------------------------------------------
5 Sevilla 36 | EUROPA LEAGUE
6 Deportivo 35 | EUROPA LEAGUE
---------------------------------------------------------
7 Athletic 33
---------------------------------------------------------
8 Getafe 31
9 Osasuna 29
10 Villarreal 26
11 Racing 25
12 Atlético 24

So, Mallorca, Sevilla and Deportivo currently occupy European spots and are only two points away of each other. Remember that Mallorca will play in Riazor later this year. Our gaps with Bilbao, Getafe and Osasuna are of 2, 4 and 6 points respectively, but I still don’t see one of them catching us. And if one of them does, seventh spot could mean European football too.

That leaves Villarreal and Atlético, who once more showed this weekend that it still looks unlikely they will have a string of victories. With 17 matches to go, the gaps of 9 and 11 points look important.

Our defensive security once more earned us a point, this time with ten against in-form Málaga. The good news is that most of our injured players are on their way back, and last night all Zé Castro, Sergio, Guardado, Valerón and Lassad didn’t play. If Lotina has all of them available as options, I’m confident our squad is strong enough. Let’s see if we can 8 points from the home matches against Xerez and Tenerife in Riazor, and Espanyol and Villarreal away.

I think 10 points is achievable!

I hope we win both home matches against those relegation candidates.

Well, the Copa del Rey is going as wished for. Sevilla already are in the final, and so will Atlético who already won 4-0 against Racing. This will increase their chances to get into Europe through the Copa, leaving more options for Deportivo in the league.

I still think that only Atletico or Villarreal can get into the first six and take Depor's spot, and now Atletico have an option to do it another way.

I'm amazed at your optimism to be honest Leon. Of course, I hope you're right but with the way we've been playing lately, I'm not sure we can keep the likes of Bilbao and Getafe behind us unless we really see an improvement.

I'm not saying I'm sure they'll finish above us but with half the season still left and as us unpredictable as ever, it's a bold statement to discount everyone but Atletico and Villarreal from mounting a serious challenge to those already in the top 6. There's still loads to play for and imo we could finish from anything as high as 4th or as low as 14th. This is La Liga, this is Depor; always expect the unexpected
