Default Spain | Primera División & Copa del Rey | 2008/2009

Season 2007/08 has already ended so it's time to discuss about the next one - 2008/09. How are our priorities? I think place in first half of the table would satisfy me. Playing like we did it in the second half of 2007/08 we can even think about European spot, but it will all depend on summer transfers.

My predictions for 2008/09:
- Real Madrid, Barcelona and Villarreal CF will be fighting for the title
- Sevilla and Atletico will be fighting for CL spot
- Deportivo, Valencia and...Espanyol (?) will be fighting for UEFA spot (at least I hope so)
- Racing, Betis, Mallorca, Athletic, Osasuna (?) - mid-table
- Almeria, Getafe, Recreativo, Numancia, Valladolid and two promoted teams - will be avoiding relegation

The only information we're still waiting for are two left promoted teams (Numancia is already promoted) which will be probabluy two of the following three: Malaga, Sporting Gijon and Real Sociedad.

Agree with almost everything in the prediction. I do think however, that either Espanyol or Valencia will be in front of us, and challenge for CL. Also, I think it's gonna be a Barcelona that challenges for the title for real this year, and gets at least really close, or Guardiola will fail, and barely hang on to CL. I don't see them go in the middle. Depending on, whether Marcelinho will stay or not, Racing will probably go up a 'category'. We'll for sure also see a surprise in one of the promoted teams. Looking at what the standings are now, it'll maybe be Numancia who can challenge for an European spot.

Finally, I think our goal should be to end in the middle(8-12th would do it for me), and try to aim for some Copa-succes, and a good European adventure.

Clinching a Europe spot would be the best we can hope IMO. But we'll need some quality additions to fulfill our hopes.

Here's my predictions:

Barça/RM for the title
Villarreal/A.Madrid/Sevilla/Valencia for the CL
Two of the above/Depor/Espanyol/Racing for UEFA Cup
Rest of all will be hoping a mid-table finish/salvation.

I think a lot depends on the comings and goings at every club. There's going to be a busy summer at the Camp Nou, with Rijkaard, Ronnie, Eto'o, Deco, Henry, Zambrotta etc. all looking for the exit door but if the new manager can build the side around the likes of Messi and Iniesta then they could be a force again next season. Real Madrid will strengthen even further but I'm not expecting too much movement so they must start as red hot favourites for the title. Villareal bottled it this year as when they had Real Madrid in their sights they stumbled and with CL next year they will invest on a couple of big players, I'm not sure it will be enough to catch the big two. Atletico had a consistent season surprisingly and they should build on that and finish comfortably in the top 4 next year. Sevilla should have been champions 2 years ago and since then their star has begun to fade, big changes will mean a uefa cup place is the best they can hope for. Valencia will be back to their usual evil ways next year and that leaves the rest (including ourselves) to scrap for points, look behind our back and dream of europe.

RM/Barca
Atletico/Villareal
Valencia/Sevilla
Espanyol/Depor/Mallorca................

This year's Intertoto edition is the last one.

About promoted teams - I think Numancia will be the weakest no matter who else advance. If there is a team that I would expect to make a suprise it's Gijon/Sociedad.

there is nothing yet to discuss as not even 1 transfer is done.

but i like these kind of meaningless stupid pre-predictions as well so:

title: RM (sure not Barca)
CL: Valencia, Villareal, Athletico
UEFA: Barca, Sevilla
Filling the top 8: Racing, Depor

Evolution is about Deportivo-specific and this topic should be about Primera in general.

We already know by now that the new season will kick off on 30 & 31 August 2008 and will end on 30 & 31 May 2009. There's a 2-week Liga break after 20 & 21 December 2008.

The final of the Copa del Rey is on 20 June 2009.

The specific match schedule will probably be released within 2 or 3 weeks.

You're right about that. That will cost the players 3(!) weeks of their holidays and imagine if such a team is subscribed for Intertoto too.

Any news on when the draw for the new season will be held? Last season it was in the middle of July
