NOTES FROM THE GAME VS GETAFE

02 Oct 2017
Depor deserved the victory, but it wasn’t easy. Luisinho shone and the team is having problems to attack by the sides, Deportivo were also lucky to tie the game after a big chance for the rival that would have meant the 0-2.

The eight notes from the game Vs. Getafe.

1- The details: If the past defeat with RCD Espanyol can be explained by the details, the same goes with this victory. Because, Depor were close to face a fatal situation that suddenly turned into hope. With the 0-1 in the scoresheet, Amath Ndiaye was close to score in a wonderful solo play (64’). The 0-2 would have been too much for a team that already had lost the hope.

But in the next play a cross from Juanfran allowed Lucas to tie the score, so the game went from a 0-2 scenario to a 1-1 status, something that paved the road to victory. Yes, Deportivo deserved the win, but it’s also true that this time faith was on the side of Los Blanquiazules.

2- Again Luisinho: This time Cartabia wasn’t too active as in past games, but Luisinho kept the high standard. The Portuguese was important both in defence and attack. Despite only finding the target in one of his five crosses, he was the player with more touches in this game (80) and his passing accuracy was decent (76%).  In defensive tasks, Luisinho made three tackles, two interceptions and four clearances. Definitely, among the top-three best players in this start of season.

3- The wingers: Depor are focusing too much the attacks by the centre, the current problem is that both Fede Valverde and Fede Cartabia are not natural wingers, therefore both aren’t used to run on the sides and search for precise crosses. Instead Valverde spent more time at the defensive side of the field, while Cartabia was starting on the offensive right side, but later was moving to the centre, and with Luisinho and Juanfran not been effective enough with the crosses, it explains why only 9 of the 21 crosses attempted in the game met the target. Depor were lucky enough as 2 of those 9 crosses ended in goals.

4- Lucas and Andone: Both only coincided on the field for twenty minutes, but the potential is there as these two important strikers might turn into a deadly couple for Deportivo. For the moment this is the first time with both scoring in the same match. The last time two strikers scored goals for Depor in the same game was for the 2-6 loss before Real Madrid (April 26, Andone & Joselu).

5- Comeback: The mentality of Deportivo has always been a major concern for the fans, because the team always went down after allowing a goal, and the stats demonstrates this. This is the first comeback in the score for Deportivo in more than a year, the previous one was in the opening matchday of last season hosting SD Eibar (from 0-1 to 2-1, August 19, 2016). Curiously, that was also the previous goal of Lucas with the Galician outfit.

6- Defeating a team from Madrid at the Riazor: The Madrilenian clubs have a been a real nightmare for Deportivo in recent years. After all, the previous time Los Blanquiazules were able to win a Primera match hosting a team from Madrid was in 2009: 2-1 Vs. Atlético Madrid.

7- Back-to-back wins at home: This is the also the first time in 2017 with Deportivo winning two straight games at home, the previous opportunity was at the end of last year (5-2 Vs. Real Sociedad and 2-0 Vs. CA Osasuna).

8- Gerard Valentín:. Right-back Gerard Valentín finally had the chance to debut with Depor. Mel believes he is too similar to Juanfran, reason why he has been ignored. It’s hard to judge his performance as he only touched the ball twice in the seven minutes he spent on the pitch, but became into the 456th men that plays for Deportivo at the elite.
