Before we proceed to the actual list of accomplishments, let us give you a few important details about the history of the Deportivo de La Coruña football club. The squad came into existence in December 1906 thanks to a bunch of Sala Calvet gymnasium members, who put the beginning to what would become one of Spain’s most beloved football clubs.

In May of the next year, the then king of Spain, Alfonso XIII, granted Deportivo de La Coruña the denomination “royal,” or “Real” in Spanish. Although initially the squad only participated in friendly games, football success was already lurking behind the corner, and, in 1912, Deportivo de La Coruña won its first-ever title, Concurso España.

From then on, successes started pouring like the rain, and Deportivo’s fan base grew tremendously. Of course, as merely every football club out there, the squad also faced a few dark times in its history. We will tell you more about these in a separate article about the team’s evolution and challenges. For now, however, let us focus on the successes.

Deportivo de La Coruña’s Golden Age: 1948-1957

While Deportivo de La Coruña did not spend its first four decades in the top tier of Spanish football clubs, 1948 saw the squad’s first more significant accomplishments. Initially, Deportivo finished the 1948-49 season in tenth place. However, the next season saw them off as the runners-up. They scored only a single point behind another legendary Spanish team, Atlético Madrid.

This success came under the leadership of Coach Alejandro Scopelli from Argentina. Part of Scopelli’s strategy included bringing in a bunch of talented players from South America. The most prominent names included Julio Corcuera, Oswaldo García, Rafael Franco, and Dagoberto Moll. These guys made stellar careers in Deportivo, securing the squad’s top-tier position for the whole nine seasons.

1999–2007: Successes at Home and Abroad

The years between 1958 and 1998 brought Deportivo many ups and downs. However, the squad went on a major success streak between 1999 and 2007, when it experienced a lot of both domestic and international successes. Some of the most celebrated accomplishments within this period include the first La Liga title in 1999-2000 and the first UEFA Champions League qualification.
